Colorado Eagles News Release
WEST VALLEY CITY, UT. - Eagles defenseman Teigan Zahn notched a goal, an assist and a fight, as Colorado defeated the Utah Grizzlies 4-1 on Saturday. Forward Luke Salazar added a pair of goals, while goaltender Kent Simpson was stellar in net, stopping 30 of Utah's 31 shots in the contest.
The Eagles opened up the scoring for a second straight night when forward Cam Maclise barreled into the Utah zone on the power play and finished a give-and-go with Ryan Harrison by tapping the puck into the net and giving Colorado the 1-0 lead just 5:27 into the contest. The goal was Maclise's third tally in as many contests.
Utah would strike back less than two minutes later when defenseman Phil Pietroniro launched a shot from the blueline that would be tipped past Simpson off a deflection by forward Michael Pelech, knotting the game at 1-1.
Colorado would head to the first intermission having outshot the Grizzlies 18-5 through the first 20 minutes of play.
Salazar would regain the Eagles lead early in the second period when he stuffed a puck in the crease past Utah goalie Troy Redmann to make it a 2-1 Colorado advantage at the 5:07 mark of the middle frame.
Later in the second period, a Utah turnover on the power play would spring Colorado on a 2-on-1 shorthanded rush, culminating with Zahn tipping a centering pass from Casey Pierro-Zabotel into the cage to grow the Eagles lead to 3-1 at the 13:27 mark of the period. The goal was Zahn's second shorthanded goal and sixth shorthanded point of the season.
Carrying a two-goal edge into the third period, Colorado would thwart Utah's efforts, forcing the Grizzlies to ultimately pull Redmann in favor of the extra attacker. The Eagles would create a turnover and create an empty-netter for Salazar to extend the Colorado lead to 4-1 with just 33 seconds remaining in the contest.
The Eagles finished the game going 1-for-2 on the power play, while going a perfect 3-for-3 on the penalty kill, with Zahn's shorthanded goal adding the exclamation point to the effort.
The Eagles conclude their three-game series against the Utah Grizzlies on Monday, March 20th at 7:10pm MT at the Maverik Center in West Valley City, Utah.
Season tickets for the 2017-18 season can now be reserved with a $50 deposit per seat by calling the Eagles ticket office at 970-686-SHOT (7468). A complete schedule can be found at www.ColoradoEagles.com.
