Elmira Jackals News Release
ELMIRA, NY- Kenton Miller notched five points (2g, 3a) and Ian Young scored 1:21 into overtime as the Elmira Jackals (15-41-7-1) defeated the Wheeling Nailers (31-25-8-0), 6-5, in overtime Sunday at First Arena. It was the final match between the longtime rivals and the Jackals held five one-goal leads in regulation before finally getting the game-winning goal in overtime.
The Jackals played a strong 5-on-5 first period and survived four Wheeling power plays to exit the first period with a 2-1 lead. Casey Thrush opened the scoring 4:47 into the first period on a terrific rush down the left wing. He sped down the wall and then while getting held he got a shot on goal and buried his own rebound to give the Jackals a 1-0 lead on a delayed penalty.
The Nailers then got four straight power plays during the course of the period and they finally converted on the fourth one. Kale Kerbashian received a pass in the slot and ripped a shot past Andy Iles at 16:18 to tie the game 1-1. Elmira had a quick response to go back up by one late in the first. Kenton Miller skated into offensive zone and dropped a pass to Nathan Moon, who fed it to Sebastien Sylvestre, who tipped it past Doug Carr to give the Jackals a 2-1 lead after the first.
The teams continued to trade goals in the second period. Garrett Meurs started it at 4:38 when he picked up a loose puck near the top of the left wing circle and wristed one past Iles to tie the game. The Jackals took another lead, this one 3-2, when Sylvestre scored on a breakaway at 10:03. He received a pass from Kenton Miller and went on goal against Carr. As he approached the crease, Sylvestre gave Carr a head fake to get him down before snapping a shot up high to make it 3-2.
Wheeling again responded with a Kevin Schulze goal at 16:03, but the 3-3 tie lasted for just 21 seconds before Elmira completed a perfect odd-man rush. Nathan Moon moved the puck into the offensive zone, dropped a pass for Ian Young who gave it right back to Moon at the right circle. There, Moon fired a quick pass to Miller who buried his 26th goal of the season at 16:24 to give the Jackals a 4-3.
The Jackals couldn't hold that lead either as the Nailers tied the score 4-4 just over two minutes later. Gage Quinney, who scored a hat trick in Elmira Wednesday night, found a rebound near the bottom of the right circle, tying the game heading into the third period.
Miller again put the Jackals in front at 5:07 of the third period, ripping a bottom of the right circle shot past Carr to give the Jackals a 5-4 lead. He received a pass from Moon, fanned on an initial shot then roofed the second chance for his 27th goal of the season. Again Wheeling tied the game on a Kale Kerbashian goal at 8:39, which eventually sent the game to overtime.
In overtime, Kyle Rankin began a 2-on-1 rush with Ian Young. Rankin skated to the left wing circle and then sent a pass across to Young, who hammered a one-timer into the back of the net for the overtime game-winning goal at 1:21 of overtime to give the Jackals the 6-5 win.
