Game Preview: Iowa Barnstormers vs. San Antonio Talons
April 10, 2014 - Arena Football League (AFL)
Iowa Barnstormers News Release
DES MOINES - The Iowa Barnstormers (1-2) host the San Antonio Talons (0-4) in their 2014 home opener on Saturday, April 12, 2014. Kickoff is set for 7:05 CDT at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, IA. The game will be available live on Mediacom Connections 22, WHO 1040 AM, and online via ESPN3 and WatchESPN.
The Barnstormers and Talons will meet two times this 2014 season, Saturday being their first matchup. For each year since 2011 the teams have played twice, splitting wins each season. The last meeting between Iowa and San Antonio led to a Talons victory with the Barnstormers coming up short after a last-minute field goal attempt, 35-34.
The Barnstormers finally return to Iowa for their home opener after three weeks on the road. Last week at Cleveland the Barnstormers fell short in a back-and-forth battle with the Gladiators, 54-47. Iowa's defense started the game off with high pressure, forcing Cleveland to rearrange their quarterback situation early in the second quarter. Marco Thomas was the favorite receiving connection for the night, tallying 163 yards and four touchdowns. Coffman played a solid game, performing at 68% with 30 of 44 completions and no interceptions.
The San Antonio Talons switched up their offense going in to their Week 5 game. The team brought in former Texans quarterback Shane Boyd for their matchup against the Pittsburgh Power. Boyd, replacing QB Marcus Jackson in the second half, gave up three interceptions and completed ten of twenty one pass attempts in his first game as a Talon. His two touchdown connections were with wide receivers D.J. Stephens and PJ Berry.
To claim their 2014 home opener victory, the Iowa Barnstormers will need to continue improving their completion rate on third down conversions. The team has proven that they can get the ball down the field, but execution will be key. Also for the offense, taking care of the ball will limit the opportunities given to the opposing team. Look for the Barnstormers defense to keep quarterback pressure high, making him uncomfortable in the pocket.
The home portion of the schedule begins this Saturday, April 12 when the San Antonio Talons come to town. 2014 season tickets remain on sale for as low as $110 per seat, while individual game tickets can be purchased for any regular season game at the Wells Fargo Arena Box office or by calling the Barnstormers at 515-633-2255.
