Game Preview: December 1 vs Gatineau
December 1, 2021 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Charlottetown Islanders News Release
The Islanders were able to show some resilience Sunday afternoon when the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada came to town for their second meeting of the season. After dropping a big game against Quebec a few nights before where the Isles offense was silenced by the hottest tendy in the league, the Islanders came out hungry against the Armada to the tune of five goals. The powerplay continues to be a lethal weapon for Charlottetown as well, with a 31.6% execution rate, they're quickly becoming the most dangerous squad to put on the man advantage. A big part of that success is credited to Xavier Simoneau and Patrick Guay. Simoneau leads the league in powerplay assists with thirteen and Guay is second for powerplay goals holding seven to his name. The Islanders look to recreate a winning streak and keep building the chemistry as they now roll into Quebec for the second time this season, starting off with the Gatineau Olympiques.
The Islanders will be running into a hot team tonight when they enter the Centre Slush Puppie. Gatineau is currently riding high on a four-game win streak which has seen them prevail through tough matchups against the Halifax Mooseheads, Victoriaville Tigres, and back-to-back tight wins over Rimouski. Now sitting with a record of 13-5-2-2, the Olympiques will be hungry for revenge when the Isles enter their home barn this time around after falling in Charlottetown 2-0. Leading the Olympiques in a tight team points race so far has been the QMJHL's 2020 second overall pick Antonin Verreault. Verreault sits with 20 points in 22 games and has already tied the number of goals he had in his rookie season at six. Antonin will be hungry to keep adding to his campaign tonight after being held to only 31 games in his debut season last year.
Charlottetown's 2-0 win over the Olympiques at the Eastlink Centre was one filled with big moments for the team. Rookie Jakub Brabenec recorded his first QMJHL goal that stood as the game-winner and Jacob Goobie notched his first career shutout in his third season with the organization. Numbers to watch in tonight's matchup will be 16, 51, and 81 as they continue to wreak havoc on QMJHL goaltenders. Xavier Simoneau continues his tear and leads the league in powerplay assists, assists, and is in second for overall points. Patrick Guay recorded his first Islanders hat-trick against the Armada and his seventeen goals have him just one back of the league lead. In his fourth season for the Islanders, Lukas Cormier continues to amaze, he has recorded thirty points in 22 games and shaping up to have his best season yet. Tied with teammate Brabenec for the league lead in game-winning goals at four, Cormier is sure to keep busy as the team embarks on their second Quebec road trip of the season.
Tonight's goaltending situation will be an interesting one, Jacob Goobie recorded the win last time out over the Armada and had success last time out against the Olympique. However, with the way head coach Jim Hulton has been switching back and forth it is Oliver Satny's turn. Satny still holds the second-best GAA in the league after allowing three goals in his last appearance against Quebec in which he faced a season-high 32 shots. The Isles have gone as far as their offense will take them so far this season and now rolling into their second three-game Quebec road trip, they look to score their way onto another winning streak.
Puck drop is set for 8 pm AST tonight at the Centre Slush Puppie. The 15-6-1-0 Islanders are set for a tight battle with the 13-5-2-2 Olympiques as the two foes are separated by just one point in the QMJHL standings at 31 and 30. You can listen to tonight's game on Q93 the Island's rock station as our broadcast team will be bringing the game to you live.
