Madison Mallards News Release
MADISON, WI - June 15, 2011. One night after defeating Eau Claire 8-4, the Madison Mallards will take the field Wednesday night looking to secure a two-game sweep of their division rivals at the "Duck Pond."
After a twelve-hit performance Tuesday, hitting coach Luis Raffan is excited with how his hitters are coming together.
"We're approaching the plate with a lot of confidence right now," said Raffan. "Guys are seeing the ball well and doing a good job of anticipating pitches."
One of the Mallards seeing the ball well is Justin Scanlon (Michigan State), who has been on fire offensively. He leads the team with a .483 batting average and has fourteen hits in only seven games played. Jumpy Garcia (Texas A&M - Corpus Christi) has also been on a tear, hitting a robust .458 since joining the team a little over a week ago.
Starting pitching continues to be as strong as ever for Madison. The six-man rotation set by field manager Greg Labbe is working hard and seeing results.
"It's all about their mindset," said pitching coach Jason Olson. "The guys know that if they keep it simple and do not over-work themselves, they can get anybody out. Our opponents have thrown some tough situations at the guys, but they stay the course and work ahead in the count."
Contributing to such a solid start for the pitchers is Chris Burgess (Blackhawk College). Burgess will start Wednesday for the Mallards and has been outstanding thus far. He is 1-0 in three starts, allowing four runs in and seven hits in fifteen innings pitched. Burgess has also struck out fourteen versus one walk.
A.J. Glasshof (Wharton Community College) will toe the rubber for the Express. Glasshof is 0-2 with a 5.68 ERA in two starts. His last outing was June 9th in a 7-2 loss to Green Bay.
Wednesday night will also be Madison Parks Night, and the first 1,000 families will receive Bucky Books.
In the NewsRusty Shellhorn was named the Northwoods League "Pitcher of the Night" for his outing against Eau Claire. Shellhorn becomes the fourth Mallards pitcher to earn the nightly honor, joining Chris Burgess, Cash Collins (Wofford), and Joel Effertz (Madison College).
