Madison Mallards News Release
MADISON, WI - June 15, 2011. The Madison Mallards used an early offensive onslaught to defeat the Eau Claire Express 13-8 in front of 5,241 fans at the "Duck Pond" Wednesday night.
After a lead-off home run by Ty Forney (New Mexico State) on the game's first pitch, the Mallards responded with vengeance.
Zac Zellers (Heartland Community College) answered with a lead-off home run on his own. Soon after, Mike McQuillan (Iowa), Justin Scanlon (Michigan State), Justin Parr (Illinois), and Tyler Jones (Long Island) all scored before even recording an out. Jones drove in three with a line-drive home run to left field.
All-in-all, eight different Mallards' players scored in the first. Zellers and McQuillan each scored twice.
The scoring would decline for the Ducks for the remainder of the game, but the damage had been done.
McQuillan scored for the third time in the third inning on a double by Scanlon and Parr scored on a ground-rule double by Nate Theunissen (Central Michigan) in the fifth to round out the offense on Wednesday.
After trailing by ten in the first, Eau Claire made a valiant effort to come back. The Express scored seven times between innings three through eight, but the first inning was too much for them to overcome.
Leading the way for the Eau Claire offense was Forney, who was 3-for-5 with three hits and two runs scored. Nick Addison (Illinois-Chicago) and Josh Scheffert (Nebraska) also belted home runs.
Picking up the win for Madison was Chris Burgess (Blackhawk College). Burgess went five innings, allowed five earned runs on seven hits, and struck out three while walking three. Despite the shaky start, Burgess improved to 2-0 on the season.
Jerad Grundy (Heartland Community College), Nick Sutherland (Minnesota State - Mankato), and Matt Milroy (Illinois) all made relief appearances for the Mallards.
Taking the loss for the Express was A.J. Glasshof (Wharton Community College). Glasshof (0-3) went one-third of an inning, giving up eight runs on six hits. He walked two, struck out one, and allowed two home runs. Coming into Wednesday's game, Glasshof had an ERA of 5.68, and he saw it climb to 16.20 after his performance.
The Mallards will travel to Green Bay Thursday for a quick one-game stint against the Bullfrogs at Johannes Stadium. First pitch against the 8-6 Bullfrogs will be 7:05 p.m.
