Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
Frisco (35-30, 75-60) @ Corpus Christi (25-40, 50-85)
The blow was sudden and swift. Renny Osuna clubbed a grand slam home run with two outs in the top of the eighth to lift the visiting RoughRiders to a 6-5 win over the Hooks last night. Osuna entered the game in the bottom of the sixth after third baseman Tommy Mendonca injured himself diving for a ball off the bat of T.J. Steele that turned into a double. Osuna smacked the second pitch from reliever Henry Villar (2-4) over the wall in left for his 10th homer of the year, this after Arcenio Leon had walked the two previous batters.
Osuna's slam erased Corpus Christi's three-run half of the seventh. Kody Hinze's single to center plated Brandon Barnes from second for a 3-2 Hooks lead, and Steele followed with a majestic home run to left-center that staked the home club to a 5-2 advantage. The result robbed starter Ross Seaton of a well-deserved win. Seaton yielded just two runs on four hits over seven innings while posting a season-best seven strikeouts.
Tonight's Matchup:
RHP Neil Ramirez (1-0, 1.88) vs. RHP Jake Buchanan (0-0, 0.00)
Ramirez, a supplemental first-round pick (44th overall) of the Rangers in 2007 out of Kempsville (VA) High School, makes his sixth start for Frisco and his 24th start this season in the Texas farm system. Last Saturday at Midland, Ramirez allowed just one run on two hits and a walk over five innings in a 3-1 win over the RockHounds. The outing represented his first start with Frisco that exceeded three innings. The fourth-year pro opened the year making one start for Myrtle Beach (Apr 8 vs. Wilm, 4.2-1-0-0-1-9, ND) before receiving a promotion to AAA Round Rock, where in 17 starts he was 4-3 with a 3.68 ERA. Placed on the disabled list in mid July with shoulder fatigue, Ramirez reemerged with Frisco in early August.
÷ Overall this season in 23 starts is 5-3 with a 3.22 ERA, with 42 walks and 111 strikeouts in 92.1 innings
÷ Went 2-1 with a 1.69 ERA in 4 April starts with Round Rock
÷ Held PCL hitters to a .232 average
Buchanan, an eighth-round pick of the Astros in 2010 out of North Carolina State, makes his AA debut here tonight for the Hooks. Called up in the wake of RHP Paul Clemens' promotion to AAA Oklahoma City, Buchanan has spent the entire season with Lancaster in the California League, where in 25 starts he went 5-10 with a 3.91 ERA, with 157 hits, 35 walks and 102 strikeouts in 158.2 innings. Though he suffered losses in each of his last six starts with the JetHawks (0-6, 4.74 ERA), Buchanan's 3.91 ERA ranks third in the Astros farm system - no small achievement when you consider that Lancaster's home games are played at ClearChannel Stadium, easily one of the most offensive ballparks in the pro ranks. To put it in perspective, Lancaster's team ERA entering play tonight stands at 5.98.
÷ Had a 2.31 GO/AO ratio with Lancaster and held Cal League hitters to a .256 average
÷ In 14 road starts with the JetHawks went 4-4 with a 2.17 ERA (1-6, 6.86 in 11 home starts)
÷ Spent all last year with Tri-City in the NYPL, going 4-5 with a 4.28 ERA in 14 starts
Slammin' it
Osuna's grand slam last night was a rarity. How rare' It was just the second slam for the RoughRiders this season. Their only other grand slam came June 13 when Mike Bianucci slugged one out as part of a seven-run top half of the fourth in Frisco's 13-6 romp at Midland.
The blast was just the third surrendered by the Hooks this year. Midland's Stephen Parker hit one May 6 and San Antonio's Jaff Decker clubbed one June 22. Both of those were also hit here at Whataburger Field.
The Hooks, meanwhile, have hit five grand slams this year - three at home and two at Northwest Arkansas in the same game (July 3).
Seaton, Cosart rolling
Seaton's start last night continued his trend towards a strong finish to the year. In striking out a season-high seven batters in seven innings, Seaton threw just 72 pitches. The performance marked his fifth straight no-decision, and in those last five starts he has a 2.37 ERA (8 ER in 30.1 IP).
Seaton's start followed Tuesday's effort by Jarred Cosart, who allowed just one run in five innings in the series opener against the RoughRiders. In his last four starts, Cosart is 1-0 with a 1.17 ERA.
Franchise lows
Last night's result marked Corpus Christi's 85th loss this year, tying the franchise record for most losses in a single season, set by the 2008 club (55-85). Adding to the record-low index, the loss gave the Hooks a mark of 8-21 in August - the worst August in the club's seven-year history. The previous August low (10-20) was set in 2008.
Furthermore, the setback gave the club a record of 11-29 in games decided by one run. That's a winning percentage of .275 in one-run games. The club's worst single-season effort in one-run affairs was also set in 2008 when the team went 16-27 for a winning percentage of .372.
