Today's Preview: The Kannapolis Intimidators (A, White Sox) look for their second straight road win against Augusta as Kyle Hansen takes the mound for his first start of the second half. The GreenJackets (A, Giants) are countering with Martin Agosta, one of the top arms in the South Atlantic League and a former Giants second round pick.
Intimidating Starters: Kyle Hansen, 22, makes his eighth start and first appearance against a Giants affiliate. He matched a career-high with seven strikeouts in his most recent start, working 5 2/3 innings against Rome on June 14. The 6'8" right-hander has been better in his road starts, going 2-0 with a 2.66 ERA in four road starts compared to going 0-2 with an 8.27 ERA (15 ER/16.1 IP) in four games (three starts) in Kannapolis. The White Sox picked Hansen in the sixth round of the June 2012 draft out of St. John's University in Queens, NY where he was a First-Team All-Big East selection as a sophomore and a Second-Team All-American by Baseball America in 2010. He led St. Dominic High School (Oyster Bay, NY) to their first state championship as a senior and was twice named First-Team All-State. Hansen is the younger brother of Boston's 2005 first-round pick Craig Hansen, who pitched in the Major Leagues with the Red Sox and Pirates from 2005-09, going 4-9 with a 6.32 ERA in 95 relief appearances.
Augusta's Arm: Martin Agosta makes his 13th start of the season and first against the Intimidators. The 22-year-old has dominated the SAL in his last four starts, going 2-1 with a 0.64 ERA (2 ER/28 IP), working 7.0 innings in each outing. He finished the first half with back-to-back 7.0-inning shutout performances beating Lexington (June 7) and Charleston (June 13). Agosta, a second round pick in June 2012, struck out 10 batters against Lexington, matching a season- and career-high and earning SAL Pitcher of the Week honors for June 3-9. Agosta ranks fourth in the SAL with a 1.97 ERA, is second in wins (7) and strikeouts (88), ranks third in average (.179), fourth in WHIP (1.02) and highest strikeout/9 IP ratio (11.53). He has struck out at least five batters in 11 of his 12 starts and at least seven batters in nine of his 12 starts. The Giants selected Agosta in the second round (84th overall) in the June 2012 draft out of St. Mary's College of California where he went 9-2 with a 2.18 ERA in 14 starts his final season. In five starts with Short-Season Salem-Kaizer in 2012, he struck out 19 batters over 10.1 innings.
Beast-Mode Brennan: Starter Brandon Brennan worked 7.0 strong innings on Friday, allowing a pair of unearned runs on three hits, earning his third straight win. Brennan had lost seven straight starts and nine of his first 11 outings before picking up wins in his last two starts of the first half. His first outing of the second half allowed him to pick up where things left off. The 7.0-inning outing is the second-longest by Brennan this season. He now ranks third in the SAL with 75.2 innings pitched. While he is still tied for the league lead with nine losses, he is also the league leader with 94 hits allowed, 310 at-bats against, 61 runs allowed and 50 earned runs allowed.
Atta-Boy Anderson: Tim Anderson, the White Sox first round pick in the 2013 draft, recorded his first professional hit on Friday on a third-inning RBI-single, scoring Micah Johnson from second base. Anderson went 2-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI with a stolen base, also the first of his professional career.
Coats vs. Jackets: Jason Coats went 3-for-5 with a home run (6), two three RBI and two runs scored. He is now batting .515 (17-33) with two home runs and five RBI in nine games against Augusta, with an on-base percentage of .529 and a .879 slugging percentage.
