Gotta Have It
Tuesday's defeat in overtime certainly leaves a bitter taste in the Winterhawks' mouths, but there's no time to dwell on it. Game 4 goes less than 24 hours later, and it's a must-win for the Hawks to keep their season alive.
Portland has played well enough to win multiple games in this series and has plenty of positives to lean on as the team seeks a springboard back into the contest. After Game 3, Head Coach/GM Mike Johnston spoke about how one win can change a series, and that's exactly what the Hawks will seek tonight.
"It's not pressure. What we need to do is win a game, so our focus is just going to be on winning a game, and then a series can be turned around quickly."
Stay Disciplined
Game 3 was a tight-checking battle with momentum swings both ways and not a lot separating either club. But a look at the box score reveals one large discrepancy - Moose Jaw's six power plays (two converted) to Portland's two (none converted). The Winterhawks' penalty kill was fantastic throughout the night, but two Denton Mateychuk daggers in the second period were the difference during regulation.
Mateychuk's goals aside, it's a lot to ask of a PK unit to kill six penalties against a lethal unit like Moose Jaw's and it knocks the rest of the Hawks' lineup out of sync as players are shifted for special teams responsibilities. In a key contest tonight, it's crucial for Portland's veteran group to stay out of the penalty box to avoid shorthanded scenarios and keep the team's four-lines-deep roster rolling.
