Game 55: February 9 vs. Saskatoon
February 9, 2016 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Medicine Hat Tigers News Release
VS. BLADES: Tonight marks the final meeting of the season between Saskatoon and the Tigers with the visitors trying to salvage a series split tonight as Medicine Hat have taken 2 of 3, with the road team taking all 3 games this year. Matt Bradley, Chad Butcher and Mason Shaw all have 4 points each against the Blades this year. Mack Shields and Nick Schneider have faced the Blades once each and posted GAA under 2.00 (1.00 and 1.92 respectively).
TONIGHT'S MATCHUP:
Both clubs come into tonight's game having been victorious in 2 of the last 10 games. Medicine Hat is coming off of back to back losses in Regina and Brandon, despite being shorthanded and dressing 17 skaters
Saskatoon's Cameron Hebig leads all Blades in scoring against the Tigers, recording 4 points in 3 games, while goaltender Brock Hamm has appeared in 3 games as well, posting a 3.44 GAA
Medicine Hat has the advantage over the Blades over the past 5 seasons sporting a 10-7-1-1 record and a 4-4-1-0 record at home
2015-16 WHL RANKINGS: Record (20-30-3-1). Central Div. - 5th Eastern Con. - 10th Home - (11-13-1-1) Away (9-17-2-0)
TIGERS FAST FACTS:
New Blades player Braylon Shmyr, acquired from Brandon prior to the trade deadline has 9 points in 14 games, while Colton Waltz, also acquired in the same trade has 2 points in 13 games with Saskatoon
Blades goaltender Brock Hamm has lost his last 4 starts and has allowed 16 goals in that span. Mason McCarty has the Blades lone goal in their past two games as Saskatoon has been outscored 11 to 1 their past 2 games
FEBRUARY 9TH TEAM HISTORY: The Tigers met Prince George on this night during the 2010-11 season. The Cougars would outshoot Medicine Hat 43-21 in the game, however a 41 save performance by Tyler Bunz allowed Hunter Shinkaruk to score the game winner in the second period, his 13th of the season as captain Wacey Hamilton scored his 17th of the year into an empty net to seal the game 5-2.
SHORTHANDED AGAIN: The Tigers over the past 2 seasons have used "the farm" of prospects exclusively because of injuries or illness. This season has caused the Tabbies to lose key players such as Steven Owre and Clayton Kirichenko to injury, calling up 6 different affiliates. On Saturday night, Medicine Hat played with just 18 skaters against the Brandon Wheat Kings.
PLAYOFF CHASERS: Medicine Hat is in an odd position as the stretch drive to the end of the 2015-16 campaign is in sights. The Tigers are on the outside looking in on the playoff picture and sit 9 points back of Regina for the final wild card position, while Saskatoon is only 4 points behind the Tabbies. Medicine Hat has played well but will continue to get great goaltending and timely goals in order to extend their playoff streak.
BREAKOUT SEASON: Tigers forward Alex Mowbray is making his 19 year old season one to remember as the Calgary native has surpassed all his career totals from last year as he recorded his 10th goal on the season last night in Regina. Mowbray has 19 points in 50 games.
2016 BLADES WOES: Saskatoon started the 2016 calendar year with 2 consecutive victories, but since that time the Blades have only managed to pick up 3 wins over the next 14 games, sliding Saskatoon to 11th in the Conference.
