Joe Schiller in Shutdown Mode For Minnesota State...
By Shane Frederick Free Press Staff Writer The Mankato Free Press Sun Jan 15, 2012, 11:16 PM CST
MANKATO - Every once in awhile, Joe Schiller shows up to Minnesota State men's hockey practice and gets a special assignment for the upcoming series.
Last week, Schiller found out that he would have the task of shadowing Wisconsin star center Mark Zengerle. By Saturday night, following the Mavericks' series split with the Badgers, Schiller graded out pretty good in his job.
"That No. 26 guy pretty much followed me around no matter where I went the entire two games," Zengerle said.
Zengerle might not have known Schiller's name, but he won't forget what he did. Zengerle had his 20-game point-scoring streak halted on Saturday, one game shy of the Badgers' record, which is owned by Mike Eaves, the team's coach. He had two points in Friday's 4-0 Wisconsin win - an even-strength goal on which he briefly slipped out of Schiller's sight and an assist on a power-play goal.
"A ton, a ton," coach Troy Jutting said of his trust in Schiller's defensive skills.
Schiller centered a senior line with Adam Mueller on his left and Justin Jokinen to match up against the Zengerle line. The trio teamed up for Schiller's empty-net goal to seal Saturday's 3-0 Wisconsin win. Schiller also assisted on MSU's first two goals, both on the power play.
"It's doing what you're asked to do," said Schiller, who took just one penalty in the series. "It's such an important role."
The only place where Zengerle won the battle was in faceoffs, he was 34-8 in the series, while Schiller was 7-29.
The Mavericks also held Wisconsin defenseman Justin Schultz without a point. Schultz is the nation's top-scoring defenseman with 11 goals and 32 points.
Jutting said the goal with Schultz was to always be aware of him on the ice and "force the puck out of his hands" as quickly as they could.
"I think Justin Schultz is the best player in college hockey," Jutting said, "and I think Zengerle is close. They're two great, great players."
