Tri-City Storm News Release
KEARNEY, Neb. - A furious late rally by the Tri-City Storm (19-23-5) wasn't enough as a late goal gave the Green Bay Gamblers (29-14-3) a 4-3 win on Friday night in front of a crowd of 4,099 at the Viaero Event Center.
Storm forwards Brian Ward and Trevor Mingoia each scored a goal and an assist in a three-goal third period in which Tri-City erased a 3-0 deficit.
The Gamblers got goals from Matthew Weis and Kyle Novak in the opening frame and led 2-0 after the first.
Green Bay then made it 3-0 on a late second period goal from Nicholas Schilkey and had a commanding lead heading into the third.
Tri-City got it together for the third, scoring three straight and eventually evening the score.
Mingoia got the first Storm tally of the night on the power play, taking a pass in front from Ward and firing it past Green Bay goaltender Tony Kujava. Grant Opperman was credited with a second assist on the goal.
Minutes later it was Ward who took a pass from Jared Linnell and found space in front of the net to backhand a shot past Kujava and into the top left corner of the cage. The goal brought the Storm within one of the Gamblers, 3-2.
Tri-City got the equalizer 29 seconds after Ward's tally when Ben Foster poked a loose puck into the net. Mingoia took the initial shot and the newest Storm forward found the rebound and snuck it home. Eli May was credited with the second assist.
The Gamblers immediately took a time out to try and settle things down as the Viaero Event Center crowd had become unglued.
But the Storm couldn't hold the momentum late in the game and a final goal from Green Bay's Ryan Siroky proved to be the decisive tally, putting the Gamblers out in front for good, 4-3.
Justin Quale played in between the pipes for the Storm, making 21 saves on 25 shots.
Tri-City will now head on their longest road swing of the season. The trip includes games at Waterloo, Indiana and Youngstown next weekend. The stretch of three games in as many days starts on Thursday night when the Storm take on the Black Hawks at 7:05 p.m.
