Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, IA- A back-and-forth game saw the Green Bay Gamblers notch the game's final three goals to hand the Dubuque Fighting Saints its third straight loss Friday night. The Fighting Saints fell to the Gamblers 7-5 in front of a season-high crowd of 3,336 fans at the Mystique Community Ice Center. Alexx and Jarrid Privitera both had three points for Dubuque in the losing effort.
With the game deadlocked 4-4 going into the final period, the Fighting Saints started the third period in a favorable fashion. Jarrid tipped a point shot over Green Bay goaltender Jared Rutledge's blocker to give the Fighting Saints a 5-4 lead only 44 seconds into the frame.
However, Green Bay rattled off the game's final three goals en route to the win. Kevin Irwin scored a highlight reel goal, dancing around Dubuque's Blake Hillman and deking Saints goalie Hayden Stewart to tie the game 5-5 at 5:47.
Five minutes later, Connor Hurley made a great first impression on his new teammates. After coming over in a big trade from Muskegon, the Buffalo draft pick scored the game-winning goal in his first game with the Gamblers, jamming a puck past Stewart on the right wing to make it 6-5. Ryan Siroky would add an empty netter with 44 seconds left to give Green Bay the win.
The game started with a bang. Alexx Privitera's wrist shot on the powerplay only 37 seconds into the contest trickled past Rutledge and in to give Dubuque an early 1-0 lead. Jarrid Privitera fed his older brother for the goal.
The Gamblers would respond back with a pair of goals to take a temporary lead. Ryan Lough fed Dawson Cook on the back door, and he one-timed a shot past Stewart to make it 1-1 at 5:08 of the first period. At 10:27, the Gamblers took the lead on a Matthew Weis goal. Nick Schmaltz put the puck behind the net to Weis to scored from an odd-angle on the right wing to make it 2-1 Green Bay.
Dubuque would even the score on a beautiful breakaway goal by Eric Robinson. The forward notched his third goal of the season after stealing the puck at the Green Bay blueline. Alex Robert coughed it up to Robinson, and he drifted in on goal, making a series of dekes, and slipping the puck under Rutledge's arm to tie the game 2-2 at 17:28.
The second period saw the roller coater ride continue. Alexx Privitera's shot from the right point hit the dashed board oddly, and popped to younger brother Jarrid on the left wing. He ripped a shot into the vacated net to give Dubuque at 3-2 lead only 1:12 into the second period. A minute and 22 seconds later, Alexx set up another goal. After throwing a giant open ice hit, Privitera followed the play up ice and collected a loose slot and fired a shot that was stopped by Rutledge, but the rebound landed in front of Max McHugh who tapped it under the goaltender to make it 4-2 Fighting Saints.
However, Green Bay battled back all night long, getting a second goal from Dawson Cook on a penalty shot in the second period, then tying the game on a Jr. Gates goal mid-way through the second.
Dubuque outshot Green Bay 31-23 in the losing effort. The Fighting Saints fell for the second straight time at home, and allowed five or more goals for the fourth straight game.
Dubuque will look for revenge tomorrow night as the two teams conclude the home-and-home at the Resch Center in Green Bay. Puck drop is slated for 7:05 p.m. and can be heard on Super Hits 106.1 FM.
