SAINT JOHN - Saint John Sea Dogs forward Stanislav Galiev has signed his first professional contract, Washington Capitals general manager George McPhee announced Wednesday.

The Capitals signed the 19-year-old right winger from Russia to a three-year entry-level deal. Galiev helped the Sea Dogs become the first Maritime team to ever win the MasterCard Memorial Cup in 2011, after contributing to the team's first Quebec Major Junior Hockey League title.

He set career highs in goals (37) and points (65) during the regular season, both team records for a European player. He ranked fifth in the QMJHL playoffs with 27 points, and notched a goal and two assists in four Memorial Cup games.

The Capitals chose the six-foot-one, 188-pound Moscow native in the third round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, 86th overall. Since being selected with the first overall pick of the 2009 Canadian Hockey League Import Draft, Galiev is the highest-scoring European in Sea Dogs history, with 125 points in 131 QMJHL games, including 73 assists, also a team record for Europeans. The Capitals stated in a release that Galiev, one of eight NHL-drafted players on the Sea Dogs, "will likely return to Saint John for the 2011-12 campaign."

"Watching young players develop and work towards the next level is one of the most rewarding parts of junior hockey," said Mike Kelly, director of hockey operations and associate coach of the Sea Dogs. "We are proud of Stanislav and look forward to him continuing his development here in Saint John."
