
Galaxy in World Peace Cup

PASADENA, CA (Tuesday, May 6, 2003) - The Los Angeles Galaxy, winners of MLS Cup 2002, will face Sao Paolo FC (Brazil), AS Roma (Italy) and PSV Eindhoven (Netherlands) in Group B of the inaugural World Peace King Cup tournament from July 15 through July 22. The schedule for group play was announced today at the tournament draw, held in Seoul, South Korea.
"Going into the draw we knew this tournament would be a great challenge for us," said Galaxy Vice President and General Manager Doug Hamilton. "We are looking forward to testing ourselves against teams who have storied traditions in our sport. It is only fitting that the Galaxy represent Major League Soccer in such a prestigious tournament like this."
The Galaxy, who will be the first Major League Soccer team to play in this tournament, will open play on July 16 in Jeonju when they meet Sao Paolo. Their second group match will pit them against AS Roma on July 18 in Daejon, while their encounter with PSV Eindhoven will wrap up group play on July 20 in Suwon. Should they win Group B, the Galaxy will play in the final July 22 in Seoul.
A collection of eight of the finest clubs from around the globe has been assembled for the tournament. The four clubs that will compete in Group A are Bayer Leverkusen (Germany), Olympique de Lyon (France), Kaizer Chiefs (South Africa) and hosts Seongnam Ilwha (South Korea). During the club's seven-year history, the L.A. Galaxy has faced teams from Argentina, China, Chile, Colombia, England, El Salvador, Korea, Honduras, Japan and Mexico. Overall, Los Angeles boasts a 21-10-11 (W-L-T) all-time international record, including a 1-2-1 record in 2003. The club has already claimed all there is to win in this region of the world both domestically and internationally having captured the 2002 MLS Cup, 2001 U.S. Open Cup and 2000 CONCACAF Champions' Cup titles.
The World Peace King Cup, a biennial tournament, features eight (8) clubs from around the world divided into two (2) groups of four (4), to be established in a seeded draw. Each participating club will play three (3) games during the group stage, with the winners from each group advancing to meet in the Finals. The club, which captures the World Peace King Cup, wins a prize of $2,000,000 while the runners-up receive $500,000.
