LA Galaxy News Release
PASADENA, CA (Thursday, August 8, 2002) - The Galaxy Foundation, the charitable arm of the Los Angeles Galaxy, announced today that it raised more than $27,000 on Monday, July 29 at the First Annual "Day on the Links" Golf Outing sponsored by Budweiser and the Pepsi Bottling Group at Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena, CA.
"We would like to thank all the sponsors, participants and volunteers who were involved in making the outing a huge success," said Galaxy VP/GM Doug Hamilton, who is also President of the Galaxy Foundation. "The focus of the "Day on the Links" Golf Outing is the children for which the Galaxy Foundation strives to assist and we are thrilled with the results."
Overall, the "Day on the Links" golf tournament raised approximately $5,000 in the raffle/auction, while supporters contributed an amazing $22,000 in sponsorship and golf packages for a grand total of more than $27,000. The tournament saw over 90 golfers hit the links including VP/GM Doug Hamilton, Head Coach Sigi Schmid, Cobi Jones, Alexi Lalas, Mauricio Cienfuegos, Carlos Ruiz, and Ezra Hendrickson to name a few.
The Galaxy players showed their versatility by picking up a club and using their eye-to-hand coordination with ease, as veteran defender Adam Frye led his ABC Radio Group foursome to a 1st place Low Gross Team victory, while defender Craig Waibel took his Farmer John foursome to a 2nd place Low Gross Team finish. Other contest winners on the day include; Chad Reed (Closest-to-the-Pin), Michelle Oyler and Scott Porter (Longest Drive), and Michelle Oyler (Putting Contest). Despite the fact that several golfers came within inches, no one was able to capture the 2003 Honda Pilot Hole-in-One prize.
The Galaxy Foundation would like to highlight the special contributions to this event of Nike, Old Navy and Global Golf & Gift, Inc. And to thank ABC Radio Group, Adlink, AEG Real Estate, All Access Entertainment, Cal State Fullerton Athletics, Farmer John, Golden West Pools, HBC-LA, KCAL 9, Marbri Investments, Murray Company, Nix Check Cashing, Pacific Coast Soccer Club and U.S. Soccer Foundation for their participation. The foundation also acknowledges Goudy Honda, Brookside Golf Club and Catering, and all the Galaxy players, staff and volunteers for contributing to the success of the "Day on the Links" Golf Outing.
