CARSON, CA (Tuesday, February 17, 2004) - The Los Angeles Galaxy defeated the University of California - Santa Barbara, 3-1, on a chilly Tuesday night at The Home Depot Center. Los Angeles utilized three second-half goals from midfielders Jovan Kirovski and Guillermo Arzate, and forward Jair.
In a very physical first half, the Galaxy worked to build up a rhythm for the club's offense creating several dangerous opportunities for both Carlos Ruiz and Kirovski. However, Santa Barbara capitalized first off a direct kick in the 41st minute. UCSB midfielder Matt Kubota sent a high ball into the box for forward Drew McAthy, whose header found the back of the net beating Galaxy goalkeeper Dan Popik.
Former Birmingham City forward Kirovski notched his second preseason goal with the Galaxy in the 46th minute. MLS SuperDraft pick Josh Gardner crossed a sharp ball into the near post for Ruiz, who flicked the ball on for a waiting Kirovski. He connected from 12-yards out burying the ball in the back of the net.
Former UC-Santa Barbara and current Galaxy midfielder Guillermo Arzate put the home side up 2-1 in the 66th minute. Cobi Jones slipped a ball up the heart of the Santa Barbara defense putting Arzate in alone behind the defense with only goalkeeper Dan Kennedy to beat.
In the 76th minute, midfielder Ned Grabavoy again demonstrated his confidence on set pieces following his superb goal on Saturday versus the Gauchos lofting the ball into the near post. Former MLS midfielder Jair, a non-roster invitee on trail with the Galaxy, shook off his marker with a diagonal run, nodding Grabavoy's free kick past Santa Barbara's Kennedy for the 3-1 lead.
The L.A. Galaxy will be in action again this week as the club takes on UCLA on Feb. 19 (5:15pm) at The Home Depot Center and then visit the Lions of Loyola Marymount University on Feb. 21 (1:00 pm).
Los Angeles Galaxy tickets are now on sale for the 2004 season at The Home Depot Center, who open their ninth season in MLS with a match against the Revolution at 7 pm (PT) on Sat. April 3, 2004.
