Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
Fishkill, N.Y. - On a night that had a threat of rain all 4,003 fans in attendance had their umbrellas from the Family Dental Group, Mix 97, & El Ritmo radio at the ready, but didn't need to take them out.
The Scrappers got on the board first, when left fielder Eric Johnson (2 for 5, run) singled to shallow right field and Renegades Matt Rico (1 for 4, 2 RBI) made a diving stop to hold him to a single. On the next throw Renegades Pitcher Aaron Gangi (4.0 innings, 2 H, 0 ER) threw to first and the ball down the right field line for a three base error and allowed Johnson to score from first.
The Renegades came right back in the bottom of the third inning when right fielder Matt Rico singled to left/center and drove in two runs. John Jaso (1 for 5, game-winning RBI) then grounded into a fielder's choice and allowed Mark Schleicher (2 for 3, 2 runs) to score from third on error by Scrappers second baseman Ceaser Suarez.
The pitchers for both the Renegades and the Scrappers went scoreless until the top of the ninth inning, in the top of the inning first baseman Brad Snyder struck out and reached first base on a pass ball for the second time in the game. This would extend the inning. The catcher Javier Herrera walked to bring the tying run up to the plate with two outs. Ryan Goleski doubled to the left center gap and drove in two runs to tie the game before being thrown out at third base.
The Renegades looked like they were going to answer with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning when second baseman Jason St. Clair (run scored) hit a shot down the left field line but went over the fence in foul territory. On the next pitch he tried to hit the gap in right centerfield but Brad Snyder made a game saving diving catch to end the inning.
In the top of the tenth inning the Scrappers were retired three up/three down. In the bottom of the inning, Renegades batter Mark Schleicher walked to bring up Nate Dion (1 for 4), Dion would single to put two men on with only one out. Matt Rico then flew out to left field for the second out of the inning. John Jaso singled in the winning run with a liner down the right field line, scoring Schleicher.
In related news, the Denny's K-Man Javier Herrera struck out two times before coming up in the top of the ninth inning and drawing a walk after falling behind in the count 0-2.
