Gwinnett Stripers News Release

The Gwinnett Braves stemmed the Norfolk Tides 3-2 at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, GA, on Thursday night. The G-Braves kept up their winning ways on the summery side of the International League All-Star Break, taking their streak that began before the season's pause up to three games. The G-Braves (51-41) move back into first place in the IL South at a half game ahead of Durham, who lost tonight. The Tides (35-57) remain in last place in the division with the loss.

It Was Over When: With the game tied 1-1 after the 1st inning, Gwinnett got what would be the deciding run from the combo of Ruben Gotay and Ed Lucas the next frame. Gotay singled and then, two batters later, Lucas smoked a double into the left field corner to bring him home for a 2-1 lead.

Braves Beat:

On the Mound: Starting RHP Cristhian Martinez (2-1) went 6.0 IP, yielding 2 R/1 ER and scattering 6 H with a BB and 3 K's. Martinez has now allowed just 1 ER or less in four of his five starts for Gwinnett. RHP Juan Abreu went 1.0 IP of scoreless relief with 2 BB and 3 K's, pushing his scoreless innings streak to 13.0 frames. RHP Jairo Asencio closed out the game with a scoreless 9th inning for his 16th save (2nd in the IL).

At the plate: Lucas, playing 3B and LF, finished 1-for-3 with an RBI. Chris Carter, settling into his new and familiar DH role, went 1-for-4 with his 61st RBI (2nd in IL). Wilkin Castillo, who came in for Matt Young after he left the game as a precautionary measure after a collision at the plate in the 1st inning, shifted to 3B and was 2-for-2 with a SB.

The Opposition:

On the Mound: Norfolk starting RHP Henricus "Rick" Vandenhurk (5-11) went 6.0 IP, allowing 3 R/2 ER on 4 H with 4 BB and 3 K's in the loss.

At the Plate: Tides 3B Josh Bell led the team with a 1-for-1 night with an RBI and 2 BB, while former Atlanta Brave and Duluth High School alum LF Nick Green was 1-for-4.

On Deck: The G-Braves take on the Tides in game two of this four game series, and of the current eight game homestand, Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Gwinnett will send out RHP Erik Cordier (3-5, 4.37) against Norfolk RHP Chris Tillman (3-2, 4.30), who no-hit the G-Braves last season at Coolray Field on April 28th.
