Durham Bulls News Release
(Pawtucket, RI) Felipe Lopez belted a two-run homer in the second inning, but it was all Durham would get in a 3-2 loss to Pawtucket in the first game after the All-Star Break.
That loss and a Gwinnett win gave the Braves a half-game lead over the Bulls (50-41) in the South Division.
Lopez's homer to right-center, his fourth, followed a Dan Johnson single. The Bulls eventually collected four straight hits against Brandon Duckworth (5-6), but did not collect another run. After the second inning, Duckworth did not allow another runner to second until his final inning, the seventh.
Meanwhile, Pawtucket (51-41) put together all it would need in a five-batter sequence in the fourth against Andy Sonnanstine (0-1). Daniel Nava looped a single to shallow left, and Ryan Lavarnway followed with a well-struck hit to left to put runners at first and second. Lars Anderson doubled to right, scoring a run to cut the deficit to 2-1. Hector Luna then hit a sac fly to right, tying the score and advancing both runners. Nate Spears followed with bloop single to left beyond the reach of a drawn-in infield for the 3-2 advantage.
Sonnanstine replaced Alex Cobb after two innings. Cobb's outing was shortened in advance of his start Monday or Tuesday against the Yankees. Sonnanstine went four innings after being optioned from Tampa Bay. He did not walk a batter.
Durham had chances to tie or take the lead. Russ Canzler doubled to start the seventh but was left stranded at third, and Durham drew a pair of two-out walks in the ninth but Michael Bowden (10 saves) fanned Daniel Mayora to end the game.
Durham, now 2-1 on a 10-game three-city road trip, will start Alex Torres on Friday at McCoy Stadium. Veteran Kevin Millwood starts for Pawtucket. First pitch is at 7:05 with coverage beginning at 6:50 on 620 the Buzz.
