G-Braves Outlast Knights 7-6 in Wild 13 Inning Affair

August 23, 2011 - International League (IL1)
Gwinnett Stripers News Release

The Gwinnett Braves woke up early to win one that was as wild as it was long, 7-6 in 13 innings against the Charlotte Knights on Tuesday at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, GA. The G-Braves threw the first pitch at 10:35 a.m., and put the finishing touches on an ugly win more than four hours later. The G-Braves (71-60) remain in second place in the International League South, pulling within 5.0 games of Durham. Gwinnett is also second in the Wild Card race by a 2.0 game margin behind Lehigh Valley. The Knights (62-69) remain in third place in the IL South (all figures at press time, pending late games).

It Was Over When: Things got weird early. An error already in the 1st inning was followed in the 2nd by one of the strangest plays to take place on any baseball field. After singling to lead off the frame, Charlotte RF Lastings Milledge was called out for vacating first base and was, consequently, removed from the game by his manager. Things kept in that manner the rest of the way, as the teams combined for six errors and the G-Braves tallied only four of their runs via RBI. Gwinnett's Matt Young notched a walk-off RBI on a fielder's choice that was nearly a game-extending double play in the bottom of the 13th inning.

Braves Beat:

On the Mound: Starting RHP Todd Redmond went 5.2 IP, allowing 6 R/ER after being staked a 6-0 lead in what became a no-decision. He gave away 9 H, 1 BB, struck out 5 and yielded a HR. The Gwinnett bullpen was on point, combining for 7.1 IP of scoreless, one hit ball with 10 K's. LHP Dustin Richardson (1-0) earned his first decision of the season with 1.1 IP, 2 BB and 3 K's.

At the Plate: Wilkin Castillo, playing LF, finished 1-for-5 with his only hit a three run home run. The only other RBI came from Young, who played 2B and also finished 1-for-5. Mauro Gomez played 1B and was 3-for-5 at the dish with a SB.

The Opposition:

On the Mound: Charlotte starting RHP Joe Bisenius went 4.0 IP, allowing 6 R/2 ER on 4 H, 4 BB and 1 K. RHP Dan Remenowksy (1-2) went 2.2 IP, yielding 1 R/ER with 2 H, BB and K's.

At the Plate: Knights 2B Andrew Garcia was a thorn in Gwinnett's side, pulling his squad back into the game with a 6th inning three run homer of his own. He finished 1-for-6 with that HR and 3 RBI.

On Deck: The G-Braves are off tomorrow, but resume action against the Norfolk Tides on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. Gwinnett will send out LHP Yohan Flande (7-8, 4.00) against Tides RHP Steve Johnson (2-5, 5.66). The game can be heard on the voice of the Gwinnett Braves, WDUN 550 AM and 102.9 FM. Fans can also follow at www.twitter.com/GwinnettBraves1, gametracker on www.gwinnettbraves.com or MiLB TV at www.MiLB.com .

Etc: Every Thursday home game is $3 Thursday, as fans can give their wallet even more of a break at the already family and budget friendly games at Coolray Field. Patrons can purchase beverage and food specials selected each Thursday from concession stands and portable carts on the concourse for only $3. Thursday's game is also College Fair Night, with in-stadium offerings and featured Georgia colleges in attendance.
