Durham Bulls News Release
Durham, NC - Josh Bell's RBI-single in the top of the 13th inning proved to be the difference for the Tides as Norfolk defeated the Durham Bulls, 6-4 on Tuesday night at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. With Gwinnett's win at Charlotte, the Bulls' magic number remains at nine.
Carlos Rojas singled to right field to start the top of the 13th inning, then Kyle Hudson walked to put two on and none out for the Tides. Mike Ekstrom replaced Joe Bateman and got Tyler Hanson to bunt into a force out at third for the first out of the inning. Bell followed with his go-ahead single scoring Hudson to make it 5-4. Two batters later, Brendan Harris singled to left field scoring Tyler Henson for the sixth and final tally.
The Bulls led the Tides 4-0 through six innings until former Durham Bull Rhyne Hughes tagged reliever Jay Buente for a two-run homer in the top of the 7th inning to make it 4-2. One inning later John Hester blasted his fifth homer of the season off of Adam Russell to tie the game at four apiece.
Brandon Guyer got the scoring going in the bottom of the third inning with his 12th home run of the season over the Blue Monster in left field. Two batters later, Matt Carson hit his third of the year to give the Bulls a 2-0 lead. Durham's offense duplicated that effort in the fifth inning when Tim Beckham hit his third home run of the season to center field, then two batters later Dan Johnson blasted his 10th homer deep into the right field seats giving the Bulls a 4-0 lead.
LHP Cole McCurry (4-2) picked up the win with three shutout innings in relief. Bateman (1-3) took the loss allowing two runs on three hits in one inning of work. Moore had another effective night on the mound for the Bulls allowing no runs on six hits with one walk and six strikeouts.
The Bulls and Tides meet again on Wednesday night at 7:05 PM at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Tickets are available at www.durhambulls.com or by phone at (919) 956-BULL.
