Mississippi Braves News Release
GREENVILLE, SC - Two late-inning two-RBI hits from Pete Orr and Kelly Johnson led the Greenville Braves to a 7-4 win over the Jacksonville Suns Sunday afternoon at Greenville Municipal Stadium. Orr's pinch-hit single in the seventh tied the game and Johnson's double in the eighth gave the G-Braves the lead for good.
The Suns got on the board first against Greenville starter Chris Waters with a run in the second inning. Nick Alvarez singled to center and advanced to second on a Jason Repko hit. Rodney Van Buizen would then walk to load the bases, and catcher B.J. Waszgis came through with the RBI single. Waters settled down and struck out the next two to end the threat.
The G-Braves responded with a pair of their own in the bottom of the second. Ramon Castro and Johnson both singled to open the inning. J.C. Boscan then launched a Brian Pilkington pitch deep to left that bounced off the base of the wall but was originally ruled a homerun. The umpires would confer and correctly call it a ground rule double, scoring Castro. Waters then grounded out to second to pick up his first RBI of the year.
Jacksonville knotted the game at two with an unearned run in the third. There would be no scoring until the Suns struck for two off of reliever Bryan Digby in the seventh. Derek Michaelis ripped a pinch-hit homerun and Tarrik Brock came home on a Reggie Abercrombie single to run the score to 4-2.
The lead would not last as the G-Braves responded to tie the game in the bottom half of the seventh. Orr delivered the big hit, a two-run, two-out single that drove in Johnson and Bryon Jeffcoat.
Greenville erupted for three runs on one hit in the wacky eighth inning against Orlando Rodriguez (0-2) and Greg Bauer as nine G-Braves came to the plate. Cory Aldridge and Castro each drew one-out walks and scored on Johnson's double to center. The G-Braves would tack on another run on an error by the third baseman Van Buizen to give the game its final score.
Willie Collazo (5-1) got the final out in the eighth for the win, and Billy Sylvester struck out the side in the ninth for his 13th save.
