Mobile BayBears News Release

Mobile, Ala. – One night after shutting out the Smokies, the BayBears were blanked themselves Sunday night, falling to Tennessee 2-0, in front of 18,98 fans at Hank Aaron Stadium. Smokies starter Josh Axelson (2-1) picked up the win as he threw six shutout frames, allowing just three hits while striking out seven. Tennessee closer Mike Lyons earned his league-leading 30th save of the season as he worked a perfect ninth.

The game was scoreless into the sixth inning as BayBears starter Chris Oxspring was throwing a gem himself. In the sixth however, the Smokies struck for the only two runs of the game. Oxspring walked Axelson leading off the frame followed by a single by Shaun Boyd. Dan Moylan then laid down a sacrifice bunt toward first base. BayBears first baseman, Joe Gerber threw wildly to third trying to nail the lead runner. The ball rolled into leftfield, allowing Axelson to score and putting runners at second and third. After an intentional walk to Bucky Jacobsen Papo Bolivar singled to center to bring in the games final run.

Oxspring (8-4) took the loss as he allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out three in his six innings of work.

The BayBears best threat came in the third inning. Danny Bravo doubled to lead off the inning and was bunted to third by Oxspring. However, Axelson struck out Freddy Guzman and got Vinnie Faison on a groundout to second to get out of the jam.

The BayBears and Smokies will conclude their four-game series Monday night at 7:05. Roger Deago (7-7) will get the start on the mound for Mobile.
