Mississippi Braves News Release
GREENVILLE _ Humberto Quintero's fifth hit of the night, a tie-breaking single in the ninth inning, carried the Mobile BayBears to an 8-7 Southern League victory over the Greenville Braves Thursday.
The comeback win, which came after the G-Braves had built a 6-2 lead in the first five innings, opened a four-game series at Municipal Stadium.
Mobile (12-14) scored in three of the last four innings. Quintero, batting ninth in the Mobile order, also delivered an RBI single in the eighth inning to pull the BayBears to within 7-6.
Bill McCarthy and Jason Fitzgerald each drove in two runs, helping Greenville (12-13) build an early lead. McCarthy, who leads the club with 17 RBI, delivered two-out RBI singles in the first and sixth innings.
Fitzgerald stroked a two-run homer in the fifth. Greenville jumped on Mobile starter Brad Baker for three runs in the first inning. McCarthy and Kelly Johnson delivered run-producing hits. The G-Braves added a run in the third, when Richard Lewis led off with a double and scored on a wild pitch.
McCarthy's two-run homer gave Greenville a 6-2 lead in the fifth, but the BayBears responded with two runs in the top of the sixth on Rich Gomez's second home run of the year.
The teams resume a 4-game series Friday with a 7:15 p.m. game that will be followed by a fireworks display. Left-hander Cory Stewart (2-2) will open for the BayBears against Greenville right-hander Matt Belisle (1-3).
