JACKSONVILLE, Fla. â The Suns shut out the league's most potent offense in a 2-0 victory over the Carolina Mudcats in front of 3,922 fans Thursday at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
The Mudcats (19-8) were batting .300 as a team entering the game. Three Suns pitchers limited them to seven hits and held them scoreless for the first time this season. With the victory, the Suns (15-12) gained a game on first-place Carolina.
Suns starting pitcher Tom Farmer (1-1) earned the win, pitching seven innings, walking one and striking out four. Augustin Montero and Lino Urdaneta each followed with an inning of relief. Urdaneta saved his fourth game in four chances.
Four Suns hitters each had two hits â including Farmer â whose double in the second inning led to Reggie Abercrombie's run-scoring single. The second Suns run came in the third inning when Victor Diaz drove home Nick Alvarez, who also had two hits. Mike Collins and Brennan King were the others with multiple hits for Jacksonville.
Mudcats starter Todd Moser (0-1) earned the loss in his Class AA debut. Moser struck out seven over six innings, allowing both Suns runs. Lefty Sean Fesh logged two scoreless innings of relief, keeping his total of 22 scoreless innings pitched in tact.
Carolina third baseman Miguel Cabrera went 3-for-4, raising his league-leading average to .415.
Right-hander Heath Totten (2-2, 2.76 ERA) is scheduled to face Mudcats righty Randy Messenger (1-1, 5.87) at 7:05 p.m. Friday at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
