The Lead: The Gwinnett Braves beat the Norfolk Tides 5-2 on Friday night in the series opener in Virginia. Newest offensive lynchpin Tyler Pastornicky notched three hits, and starter Todd Redmond did enough for his seventh win for Gwinnett. The G-Braves (56-44) kept pace at a half-game behind Durham in second place in the International League South, while the Tides (36-64) remain in last in the division.
It Was Over When: Singles by both Jose Constanza and Pastornicky led off the game for Gwinnett, and eventually turned into a 1-0 lead (on a run-scoring double play groundout) the visitors would not squander. Braves Beat: ? On the Mound: RHP Redmond (7-8) went 5.0 IP, yielding just 2 R/1 ER and scattering 4 H with 2 BB and 2 K's. RHP and closer Jairo Asencio was rock solid again, going a scoreless 9th inning with 1 H, 1BB and 1 K for save number 18 on the season. At the Plate: First baseman Mauro Gomez led the way with a 2-for-3 night and 2 RBI. Right fielder Constanza was 2-for-5 with an RBI, while SS Pastornicky was 3-for-5 with a SB.
The Opposition: On the Mound: Tides starting RHP Mitch Atkins (2-4) went 7.0 IP, yielding 4 R/ER on 6 H with 3 BB and 3 K's in the loss. At the Plate: Norfolk and Orioles rising prospect 2B Ryan Adams was 2-for-3 with an RBI, while LF Tyler Henson was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a SB.
On Deck: Gwinnett takes on Norfolk in game two of the road swing on Saturday night at 7:15 p.m. in the Tides' lair. The Braves will send out RHP Julio Teheran (10-1, 1.70) vs. RHP Steve Johnson(0-4, 6.81) for the Tides.
