Solano, Chiefs batter Yankees 8-3

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release

The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, used four RBI from Jhonatan Solano to beat the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees 8-3 on Friday night. Solano put the Chiefs ahead for good with a three-run home run in the fifth inning and tacked on an RBI single in the Chiefs' three-run eighth inning. The win was the first time in nine games against the Yankees that Syracuse scored more than four runs.

Syracuse (44-54) starter Brad Peacock pitched five strong innings to claim his first Triple-A win. He did run into a bit of trouble early, with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (51-47) scoring an unearned run in the second. Jordan Parraz singled, reached third on a Peacock throwing error on a pickoff attempt, and scored on a Luis Nunez sacrifice fly.

The Chiefs would answer in the fifth against reliever George Kontos. Michael Aubrey singled to lead off the frame and Matt Antonelli walked with one out to bring up Solano. The Chiefs' catcher crushed a 3-1 pitch to deep left field for his fourth home run of the season, putting Syracuse ahead by two runs.

The teams traded single tallies immediately after that. In the bottom of the fifth, Doug Bernier doubled in Austin Krum to cut the lead to 3-2, but Bernier was cut down trying for a triple. A perfect relay from center fielder Corey Brown to shortstop Seth Bynum to third baseman Antonelli prevented Bernier from advancing to third base.

Syracuse took a 4-2 lead in the sixth inning with the benefit of just one hit. Brian Bixler singled to lead off the inning to bring up Jesus Valdez. The right fielder hit a grounder to third base, and Kevin Russo threw the ball away attempting to get Bixler at second. That put runners at the corners, and Michael Aubrey's groundout drove in a run with one out.

Down by two runs, the Yankees rallied against Syracuse's bullpen in the seventh inning. Krum singled and reached second on a throwing error by Jeff Mandel on a pickoff attempt. Nunez then lined an RBI single to center field on an 0-2 count and advanced to second on the throw home.

Atahualpa Severino relieved Mandel and immediately struck out Bernier, but Kevin Russo singled Nunez to third. Jesus Valdez's throwing error then advanced Russo to second with only one out. But Severino would bear down. The left-hander induced a groundout from Greg Golson before intentionally walking Jesus Montero to load the bases. In a 4-3 game, Severino then struck out Mike Lamb to strand three runners.

The Chiefs blew the game open in the late innings. Syracuse tacked on three eighth-inning runs thanks to three hits and two Scranton/Wilkes-Barre errors. Seth Bynum's single, Antonelli's fielder's choice groundout, and Solano's single increased the lead to 7-3. The Chiefs would add a ninth-inning run on a Chris Marrero RBI groundout.

Syracuse and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre continue their series at 7:05 Saturday night with two left-handed starters dueling. Tommy Milone will throw for the Chiefs against Yankees southpaw Greg Smith.
