G-Braves Blank Charlotte, 3-0

FORT MILL, SC - Second baseman Drew Sutton's two-run double in the top of the eighth broke a scoreless tie and propelled the Gwinnett Braves to a 3-0 win over the Charlotte Knights in game one of a three-game series at Knights Stadium on Friday night.

Prior to the hit, neither team could do much offensively. Up until that time, the Braves could manage only four hits. They would finish with seven. The Knights were handcuffed all night by Braves' pitching and ended up with only four hits for the game. The Braves added a run in the top of the ninth when right fielder Jordan Parraz scored from third on a fielders' choice ground ball hit by center fielder Luis Durango.

Gwinnett starter Yohan Flande was again close to unhittable in his third start of the year. The lefty retired the first 13 batters of the game before Charlotte DH Dan Johnson delivered a one-out infield single in the fifth. Flande worked 6.2 scoreless innings, giving up only two hits and no runs. He walked one and struck out eight. Flande has yet to allow a run this season in 15.2 innings worked.

Right-hander Jason Rice (W, 1-0) earned the win in relief, working one inning with one hit while walking three and striking out one. When Rice entered the game in the seventh with two outs, he immediately loaded the bases, but was able to work out of the jam. Left-hander Dusty Hughes (S, 1) picked up his first save of the year working the final 1.1 innings. He allowed only one hit and struck out two.

Charlotte right-handed reliever Jhan Marinez (L, 0-1) took the loss in relief. He worked 2.2 innings with two hits, two earned runs, two walks and four strikeouts. Knights' starter Eric Stults worked five scoreless innings with three hits, three walks and eight strikeouts.

Suttton finished 1-for-4 with the double and two RBI, extending his team-best hitting streak to nine games. Parraz went 3-for-4 with a triple and a run scored.

The G-Braves and Knights continue the six game home-and-home series Saturday night in Fort Mill, SC. Right-hander Todd Redmond (1-1, 1.80) gets the start for Gwinnett.
