Gwinnett Stripers News Release
The Gwinnett Braves beat the Durham Bulls 11-4 on Thursday night, taking the first game of a short, two game swing with their rivals at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, GA. For the second game in a row, a G-Braves home run opened the floodgates for a lineup that led the squad back to the .500 mark for the first time since May 10th. The G-Braves (66-66) pull within 17.0 games behind International League South leaders Durham (83-49), who clinched the division already, in second place. Gwinnett remains 7.5 games back of Wild Card leaders Columbus.
It Was Over When: With the game tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the 5th inning, first baseman Freddie Freeman clubbed a 2 run homer that broke the game open in a 4 run inning. The G-Braves put 4 runs up the very next inning, too.
Braves Beat:
On the Mound: Starting LHP Jose Ortegano went 4.0 IP and yielded 3 R/ER on 6 hits, while walking 3 and striking out 3 batters. Ortegano has less than 5.0 IP in four of his last six starts. RHP Vladimir Nunez (1-0), activated from the disabled list yesterday, went 1.1 IP of scoreless ball to earn his first victory since 8/31/09 against Durham.
At the plate: Freeman stayed hot, finishing 5-for-5 with a HR and 4 RBI. He's the only other Brave to notch 5 hits other than former G-Brave Gregor Blanco who was 5-for-6 also at Durham on 8/31/09. Left fielder Wilkin Ramirez was 2-for-4 with 3 RBI, right fielder Brent Clevlen was 1-for-5 with 2 RBI and third baseman Troy Glaus had a 2-for-5 night with an RBI.
The opposition:
On the Mound: Durham LHP Brain Baker (8-5) went 4.1 IP and allowed 7 R/5 ER on 10 hits to earn the loss.
At the plate: Catcher Dioner Navarro went 2-for-5 with 2 RBI, while first baseman Leslie Anderson was 3-for-4 with an RBI.
On Deck: Gwinnett continues its final homestand of the season, wrapping up their short two game series against division-winners Durham at 7:05 p.m. on Friday night. The G-Braves will send RHP Kenshin Kawakami (0-1, 4.11 ERA) to the mound against RHP Bobby Livingston (3-8, 5.79 ERA) for the Bulls. The game will be broadcast on the radio at WDUN-550 AM.
