Syracuse Outlasts Buffalo 5-4 in 14 Innings

Syracuse, N.Y. - Brian Bixler's two-out RBI single in the 14th inning gave the Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, a 5-4 win over the Buffalo Bisons Thursday night at Alliance Bank Stadium. The four hour-22 minute contest was Syracuse's second-longest game of the season. The Chiefs are 6-0 in extra inning games in 2010.

With Pete Orr on third and two outs, Brian Bixler slapped Adam Pettyjohn's 3-2 pitch into left field, plating Orr with the game's winning run. Bixler's hit was his third of the night and it gave the Chiefs their first run since the sixth inning. Neither team had scored since the seventh.

The Chiefs (68-63) struck first with a pair of second inning runs against Buffalo starting pitcher Fernando Nieve. Michael Martinez opened the frame with a broken bat single to right. Leonard Davis followed with a walk and Carlos Maldonado poked a groundball single to left, loading the bases for Erik Arnesen. The pitcher lofted a sac fly to right to plate Martinez with the game's first run. Davis crossed home on Boomer Whiting's groundout in the next at bat to make it 2-0 Syracuse.

The Bisons (70-61) notched three runs in the fourth to grab their first lead of the night. All nine Buffalo hitters came to the plate in the inning. Russ Adams started the scoring by driving a long homer over the right field wall. Later in the inning, Luis Hernandez punched a base-loaded single into center for two more runs. The hit was the Bisons' fifth of the inning against Syracuse righthander Erik Arnesen. Seth Bynum made a diving stop on a Lucas Duda groundball and flipped to Danny Espinosa at second for the inning's final out.

The Chiefs went back on top after a two-run sixth inning. Chase Lambin followed Seth Bynum's leadoff walk with a towering home run to right, his 14 th.

The lead lasted just a half an inning as Buffalo fought back to tie it at four in the seventh. With two outs and runners on first and second, Mike Cervenak rolled a single into left field. Boomer Whiting bobbled the ball in the outfield, allowing Andy Green to tie the game from second base.

Joe Bisenius pitched the 13th and 14th innings for his first win. Bisenius struck out three and walked one and didn't give up any hits.

Pettyjohn was charged with the loss. The lefthander went 1 2/3 innings for the Bisons. He allowed three hits and the game-winning run.

Arnesen tossed the first six innings of the night for Syracuse. He surrendered nine hits and three earned. The righthander struck out four and issued two walks.

Buffalo's starter Nieve went six frames for the Bisons, giving up four runs on five hits. He walked three and struck out five.

The Chiefs and Bisons will finish up their two game set Friday night at Alliance Bank Stadium. Yunesky Maya will make his first start with Syracuse against Buffalo's Josh Stinson (0-1, 4.50). First pitch will be at 7:10.
