Indy Fuel News Release
INDIANAPOLIS - The Indy Fuel, proud ECHL affiliate of the NHL's Chicago Blackhawks and the AHL's Rockford IceHogs, announced Tuesday that they have signed forwards Cody Sharib and Tyler Currier to ECHL contracts for the 2016-17 season. Sharib returns to the Fuel after a successful rookie season, while Currier was acquired via a trade from the Elmira Jackals on June 14.
Sharib, 25 appeared in 69 of the Fuel's 72 games in 2015-16, recording 33 points (17g, 16a), 44 penalty minutes and a +5 rating. The 6-foot-2, 209 pound forward finished fifth in team point scoring and led all Indy skaters with 17 goals, earning Fuel Rookie of the Year honors in the process.
"We are excited to have our leading goal scorer back and we are now looking for more out of him during his second season," said Bernie John, Fuel Head Coach and VP of Hockey Operations. "Cody does a little bit of everything and we expect him to improve upon his numbers from last year. With his size, skill set and determination he should be a 20 goal scorer for us [in 2016-17]. He is a key part of our hockey team."
A native of Needham, Mass., Sharib came to Indianapolis after a four-year collegiate career at the University of Connecticut, where he posted 25 goals and 23 assists in 132 total NCAA contests. Prior to joining the Huskies, Sharib won a pair of championships in 2010 and 2011 with the New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs in the Eastern Junior Hockey League (EJHL).
The Fuel obtained the rights to the 28-year-old Currier as part of the deal that sent goaltender Shane Owen to Elmira in early March. During 66 games with the Jackals in 2015-16, the 6-foot-2, 205 pound tallied 35 points (21g, 14a) and 70 penalty minutes. In addition to leading Elmira with 21 goals last season, Currier played a game each with the AHL's Utica Comets and Springfield Falcons - recording a goal and an assist with the latter.
"We are glad to have landed this high scoring winger and are excited to add him to our roster," John said. Tyler brings another big body and can play a great puck possession game below the dots in the offensive zone. With Tyler we are getting another 20 goal scorer that we expect the same, if not better numbers, from this upcoming season."
In parts of two seasons with Elmira, the Missouri Mavericks and Alaska Aces, Currier has logged 118 ECHL games, picking up 29 goals and 22 assists. The Anchorage, Alaska native and product of the University of Alaska-Anchorage began his professional career with the Missouri Mavericks of the Central Hockey League (CHL) in 2013-14, under former Fuel coach Scott Hillman and alongside Owen and Fuel defenseman Anders Franzon.
The Fuel now have five players under contract for 2016-17, consisting of four forwards and one goaltender. An up-to-date preseason roster can be found .
