Fuel Settle for Split in Two-Game Set as Wings Claim 5-1 Win
March 18, 2017 - ECHL (ECHL)
Indy Fuel News Release
INDIANAPOLIS - The visiting Kalamazoo Wings struck early and late in the second period with two unanswered goals to snap a scoreless duel and defeat the Indy Fuel Saturday night at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum by the score of 5-1.
After a scoreless opening stanza, which featured a magnificent 20-saves performance from Fuel goalkeeper Eric Levine, the Wings Lane Scheidl and Cameron Darcy connected at 4:13 and 16:17 respectively in the middle period vaulting the Wings into an insurmountable 2-0 advantage.
Undefeated this season when scoring the game's FG at 18(15-0-3), Kalamazoo extended its lead to a trio at the 6:51 mark of the third period when Scheidl delivered his second goal of the night and the Wings 10th SHG of the season. The Scheidl strike stoked a Wings 3-goal third period uprising which was crowned by 2-late goals :15 apart from Brian Hart and Josh Pitt with the Hart goal scored into the empty net after Indy had lifted Levine for the extra attacker.
Center Jake Marchment accounted for the Fuel's lone goal at 12:53 of the same frame. It was his 13th goal of the campaign and his second in as many games in this series against the Wings, representing his initial 2-goals since his acquisition by the Fuel. Marchment registered an Indy individual single game high of 9-shots on the goal in the contest.
Kalamazoo outshot the Fuel, 45-33; almost identical to Friday night in Kalamazoo when the Fuel prevailed 6-5. In that one, the Wings outshot Indy, 45-34.
Fourteen-year veteran goaltender Joel Martin posted the victory in goal for the Wings while Eric Levine was the hard-luck losing netminder for Indy.
The two teams complete the 4-games' season series square at 2-victories apiece with both teams 2(1-1-0) at home and on the road.
Indy is now 7(2-3-2) through its first 7-games in March. The Fuel will close their home schedule for this month on Sunday in a 3:05 matinee on Family Fun Day against division rival Quad City.
