INDIANAPOLIS - The Indy Fuel, proud ECHL affiliate of the NHL's defending Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks and the AHL's Rockford IceHogs, re-signed forward Pete Massar and inked rookie defenseman Ben Marshall for the 2015-16 ECHL season, the team announced Monday. In 54 appearances for Indy in 2014-15, Massar registered 10 goals, 30 points and 37 penalty minutes in his first professional season while Marshall netted two goals, 11 points and 20 penalty minutes last year in his senior campaign at the University of Minnesota.
"Pete is a skilled player and is very dangerous below the opposing team's goal line," said Fuel Head Coach and EVP of Hockey Operations Scott Hillman on Monday. "I believe he learned a lot throughout his first professional season in terms of what we expect and what it takes to be successful in Indy...He had some outstanding games in our inaugural season and we look forward to seeing him compete in October."
A 5'9", 181 lb. right-handed forward from Williston, Vermont, Massar collected eight goals and 15 points in 51 NCAA appearances for the University of Vermont in three seasons with the Catamounts from 2011-12 to 2013-14 following his transfer from Clarkson University where he tallied one goal and two points in 19 games played spanning two seasons with the Golden Knights from 2009-10 to 2010-11. Prior to his collegiate career, Massar, 26, netted 16 goals, 54 points and 89 penalty minutes in 36 appearances for the Green Mountain Glades of the EJHL during the 2008-09 season.
"I'm excited to be back playing under Coach Hillman for my second pro season," said Massar on Monday. "He's given me a great opportunity and shown he believes in my abilities to contribute to the team." Massar, the first player ever to sign with the Fuel in franchise history, says his primary goal in 2015-16 is to improve on his overall performance. "I'm happy with my rookie season numbers, but I'm looking to maintain scoring consistency and have a really strong second season," said Massar. "Last year we really started to gain momentum and proved in the second half of the season that we have the ability to consistently win games...I want to continue to be a go-to guy and help lead the Fuel to our first playoff appearance."
A seventh round pick (201st overall) of the Detroit Red Wings in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, Marshall joins the Fuel following a four-year collegiate career at the University of Minnesota in which the 5'9", 161 lb., left-handed defenseman collected 17 goals, 61 points, 127 penalty minutes and a +26 rating in 159 NCAA appearances for the Golden Gophers from 2011-12 to 2014-15. Named an Assistant Captain for his senior season, Marshall helped Minnesota claim the 2014-15 Big Ten Conference Championship and collected WCHA All-Academic Team honors during the 2012-13 campaign. Prior to his collegiate career, the 22 year-old Mahtomedi, Minnesota native posted 11 goals, 34 points, 34 penalty minutes and a +20 rating in 56 appearances for the USHL's Omaha Lancers during the 2010-11 season and was named to the USHL's 2010-11 All-Star and All-Rookie Teams.
"Ben is a dynamic defenseman with a good ability to move the puck," said Hillman Monday. "As we look to continuously increase the skill level of our club, Ben is a player that we believe can have an immediate impact in his first year in the ECHL."
In 2015-16, the Indy Fuel drop the puck on their second season in the ECHL.
