Indy Fuel News Release
The Indy Fuel started the pre-season schedule off with a 4-1 win over the Fort Wayne Komets on Wednesday night at Indiana Farmers Coliseum.
After Cody Sharib gave the Fuel a 1-0 lead at 3:56 of the first period, Casey Thrush made it 2-0 with a power play marker at 16:28 after banking a backhand feed in off a Komets defender and past goaltender Andrew Walsh. Indy out-shot Fort Wayne 16-9 in the opening frame.
In the second it was the Komets who found success on the power play when Peter Sivak scored just 1:48 in from Kyle Thomas and Jamie Shaafsma, cutting the Fuel lead in half. Despite several chances in the period Indy failed to score and held a 2-1 lead at the break.
In the third period both teams made adjustments and the chances kept coming but no goals followed until the Komets pulled goaltender John McLean with just over a minute to go. After a Rhett Bly faceoff win to the right of the Fuel net, defenseman Sam Jardine carried the puck behind the goal and out the left side where he let go of a long-range wrist shot that slid in off the left post for an empty net goal and 3-1 margin.
The Fuel has agreed to play three-on-three overtime sessions after both pre-season games this year, and the clock was reset to five minutes for the OT. There, Jardin would break in 2-on-1 with Matt White, taking a shot that McLean stopped with his right pad but White put home on the rebound for the 4-1 final score.
Shane Owen picked up the win in net for Indy, playing 40 minutes and allowing one goal on 19 shots. Walsh took the loss allowing two goals on 22 shots in 30:28 of work.
The Fuel will host the Quad City Mallards Sunday for Family Fun Day at 3:05 pm at Indiana Farmers Coliseum. There will be a post-game autograph session with the entire team, plus a post-game skate with free skate rental on a first-come, first-serve basis. Fans are also welcome to bring their own skates. Finally, every ticket holder in attendance will receive a 2015-16 Indy Fuel schedule magnet and poster. Visit IndyFuelHockey.com or call 317-925-FUEL for tickets or more information.
