Elmira Jackals News Release
Elmira, NY - The Elmira Jackals led three times in the first period, but couldn't come back from a 2-goal deficit in the second period, losing 5-4 to the Adirondack Frostbite Friday night at the First Arena.
The Jackals grabbed the lead three times in the opening twenty minutes, but Adirondack always had an answer. Konstantin Kalmikov opened the scoring at 7:43 from Chris Chaput and Jarrett Konkle, but less than a minute later Kevin Watters tied the game at one at 8:28. New defenseman Mathieu Wathier scored in his Jackals debut on a slap shot from the blue line, making it 2-1 Elmira at 11:45. Three minutes later the Frostbite again tied the score when Hugo Belanger tapped in a rebound at 14:53. Elmira again pulled ahead courtesy of a Chaput goal at 18:51, assisted by Konkle and Kalmikov. But with just 4.6 seconds left in the period, Scott Drevitch tied the game at three.
In the second period the Jackals momentum turned; Adirondack scored twice and Elmira had two goals disallowed. Watters scored his second of the game, a power play goal, at 11:10 to give the Frostbite their first lead of the game. Then at 14:38 it was 5-3 Adirondack when Mark Hurtubise scored, assisted by Belanger and Watters. Belanger finished with 4 points on the game (1 goal, 3 assists), Watters and Hurtubise each had 3 points. At 15:47 defenseman Dmitri Suur received a 5-minute major and a game misconduct for kneeing, but the Jackals failed to capitalize on the big power play.
In the third period Elmira drew one back when Konkle scored his 18th goal of the season, assisted by Chaput and Kalmikov at 17:26, but it was too little, too late. Elmira out-shot Adirondack 13-6 in the final period, but only lit the lamp once.
Derek Gustafson earned the win in goal for the Frostbite, stopping 34-of-38 shots. Nick Boucher took the loss, making 26 saves on 31 shots before being pulled with 5 minutes left in the second period. Ryan McIntosh finished the game in net for Elmira, shutting down the Frostbite, stopping all 6 shots he faced. Adirondack was 1-for-2 on the power play, while Elmira finished 0-for-4. The Jackals play 3 of their next 4 games against Adirondack.
Elmira with get another crack at Adirondack as they meet again Saturday night, New Years' Eve, this time at the Glens Falls Civic Center at 7:30 pm. Sunday the Jackals are in Richmond for a 4 pm afternoon matinee on New Years Day.
