Frost Heaves wear down Frenzy
February 2, 2007 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Cape Cod Frenzy News Release
Ian McCarthy, the GM of the ABA's Cape Cod Frenzy, is now 30-6 at Champlain College, well sort of. McCarthy was a member of the '91-'92 Champlain College basketball team that went 30-5 and advanced to the second round of the NJCAA Tournament. Champlain played their home games at Burlington Memorial Auditorium, one of the two home gyms for the Vermont Frost Heaves, before closing the basketball program in 2002. The Frost Heaves defeated the Cape Cod Frenzy 119-108 before a raucous crowd in Burlington.
The Frenzy were severely undermanned and dressed only seven players. 6'11 starting center Ife Anosike was home recuperating from a minor car accident and starting point guard Steve Hailey had the flu. Despite having only two subs, the Frenzy fought hard and gained double digit leads several times during the contest.
The Frenzy also welcomed the addition of new signing, 6'8 forward Scott Hazelton to the lineup.
Vermont started strong out of the gate, grabbing an early six point lead. But the Frenzy hung tough on tough defensive and key shots by Rashid Al-Kaleem to close within 30-26 at the end of the first quarter. The Frenzy went on an 13-0 run in the second quarter to claim a 47-36 lead. During that stretch Sly McIntosh hit three three pointers. Mental errors enabled Vermont to get back on top by one, 54-53 at the half.
In the third quarter, the Frenzy again got back on top. Bilal Abdullah's alleyoop to Rob Sanders for a soaring slam put the Frenzy back on top 73-67. Aaron Cook responded for Vermont with back to back threes to tie the game back up.
The Frost Heaves full game full court press began to wear down the seven Frenzy players in the fourth quarter. As a result the defensive rotation on the zone began to show cracks, and the Frost Heaves heated up at the right time. Tyrone Barley hit back to back threes to make the score 109-100 with 1:40 left essentially putting the game out of reach.
2007 All Star forward Rob Sanders was unstoppable with 36 points and 15 rebounds. Rashid Al-Kaleem had 18 points, Sly McIntosh 17 points and 10 assists, and Raheim Lamb 15 points and 9 boards. Newcomer Scott Hazelton added 9 assists.
For Vermont, shooters Aaron Cook and Tyrone Barley scored 22 points each.
The Frost Heaves and Frenzy travel down to Cape Cod today to prepare for the final match between the two clubs on Saturday at 7:05 PM at Nauset Regional High School in Eastham.
