Kingston Frontenacs News Release

Kingston was hoping to turn their recent struggles around with a visit to Barrie, a team they had not lost to in three games this season. The Frontenacs entered play Saturday on a three game losing skid, having scored just two goals in those three games. Brendan Bonello took the crease for Kingston giving Jeremy Helvig a night off after the 3-0 loss to London on Friday.

It was a rough start for a Kingston team that was looking for something positive. The Colts jumped out to an early lead when Zachary Magwood beat Brendan Bonello just 2:44 into the game. Things got even worse a few minutes later. Andrei Svechnikov scored his 33rd of the season when he tucked a rebound around Bonello's leg for a 2-0 Barrie lead. Kingston needed a spark and Jakob Brahaney tried to provide that when he dropped the gloves with Jason Willms. After a spirited bout, Kingston looked energized. Linus Nyman cut the lead in half on the power play after taking a nice pass from Gabe Vilardi. The power play continued to roll when Brett Neumann squeezed one through the legs of Leo Lazarev to tie the game. Instead of folding after giving up two quick goals, Kingston had battled back to tie the game 2-2 after 20:00.

Unfortunately, Kingston gave the two goal lead right back in the second period. Lucas Chiodo found an empty net after a nice feed from Aaron Luchuk on the power play to put Barrie back ahead. Luchuk then scored one of his own by sliding a rebound between the legs of Bonello to give Barrie a 4-2 lead. Kingston closed the gap when Gabe Vilardi wired a shot by Lazarev on the blocker side to make the score 4-3, but Barrie struck again before the period ended when Svechnikov recorded his second of the game to restore the two goal Colts lead. Kingston would head to the final period trailing by two, looking for a third period similar to the one they had on Family Day when they scored 4 goals in the final frame to come from behind and defeat Barrie.

The hope of a come back took a massive blow in the first minute of the third period. Aidan Brown scored just 0:37 into the period to extend the Barrie lead to 6-3. Kingston was given a couple of chances on the power play to get back in the game, but after allowing goals on the first two penalties they took, the Colts shut down the Kingston power play for the rest of the game. Late in the period Brown tallied another goal to seal the game. Just for good measure, Ryan Suzuki also scored with under 2:00 remaining to make the final score 8-3 Colts.

In Kingston's previous three games they had only scored two goals, but were playing fairly well defensively. Against Barrie, they found some of their offensive game, but struggled defensively giving up eight goals. With only seven games remaining in the regular season, the Frontenacs are searching for a way to put both parts of their game together at the same time if they expect to have any success in the playoffs.

Kingston will play in North Bay Sunday afternoon before making a stop in Oshawa on Wednesday night. They will return home on Friday to host the Ottawa 67's at 7 PM.
