Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
Welcome to another edition of the From the Depths Newsletter. Over the past few games a reversal of fortune has happened to the hometown team. While playing tough against other talented teams Oneneta and Lowell, the Monsters have dropped a few games, however they stayed competitive until the very end. The pitching has been solid and the hitting is showing signs of coming around. Even though it is a short season league, any league from the New York-Penn League to the Majors should not be judged on such a small sample matter, and prospects such as Gibson, Willems, Gildea and Rhinehart should be regarded as top guys on any team in the New York Penn League. The roster matches up with anyone else in the New York Penn League, especially in the pitching department.
The last homestand started off with a lot of promise, the Lake Monsters defeated Oneneta to improve to 4-0 at home. However fortunes in baseball change and currently the Monsters are only 2.5 games out of the Stedler division with a record of 8-7. However one bright spot during this homestand has been the consistent play of Lake Monsters first baseman Bill Rhinehart who as of July 4th was hitting at a .375 clip. The Monsters were also dealt a blow as outfielder Aaron Seuss was lost for a few games with an eye ailment. Fans and the team hope that Seuss can come back soon as he was batting .314 in 35 at bats. The team however is still playing better than it has in recent years, and with farm rebuilding , teams need to take baby steps. Expect this team to stay in the thick of things all season, as most of the games that haven't fallen the Lake Monsters way have still been extremely close contests.
On the pitching front, this team seems very strong. Jordan Zimmermann, a 2nd round pick this year has been dominant in five innings pitched and has yet to allow a run, while striking out seven and only walking three. Glenn Gibson (1-0, 1.13 ERA, 18 K), Colten Willems (1-0, 1.98 ERA, 5 K), and Hassan Pena (2-1, 2.45 ERA, 7 K) have been the heart of the starting rotation this season. All three show no signs of slowing down and even though it's still early fans should still have faith in the consistency of this staff. As far as promotions go, there is nothing better than watching fireworks after a baseball game, so the Lake Monsters invite you to come see a lot of fireworks after Vermont hosts State College on July 7th. Should be an interesting start to the next homestand, as the State College Spikes make their first-ever trip to historic Centennial Field. The Lake Monsters would like to take the time to thank everyone that were apart of great crowds last weekend in the series vs the Lowell Spinners. The team will come back the 7th to fan fare and fireworks, so join us at Centennial Field for the best show in Vermont, and stay for the fireworks also.
The homestand will end on Friday, July 13th, as the Zooperstars Entertainment Act, brought to you by Comcast Cable, will perform as the Vermont Lake Monsters take on the Mahoning Valley Scrappers beginning at 7:05 p.m. Trademark characters such as "Clammy" Sosa, "Cow" Ripken Jr. and "Centipete" Rose will be on hand to show off their humorous and unpredictable stunts.
