Frogs Fall in Extras, 4-3
August 4, 2012 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Everett AquaSox News Release
The AquaSox lost to the Volcanoes, 4-3, in 10 innings Friday night at Memorial Stadium. Salem-Keizer first baseman Joe Rapp hit a solo home run to center field in the top of the 10th to give the Volcanoes the go-ahead run.
Seventeen-year-old Victor Sanchez tossed six innings of one-run ball, allowing five hits and one walk to go along with four strikeouts. The Venezuela native has gone six innings or more in nine of his 10 starts as a professional. The one run against the right-hander came in the top of the fifth on a home run by shortstop Stephen Branca.
Trailing 1-0 into the bottom of the sixth, Patrick Kivlehan got the AquaSox on the board with a two-run homer to right-center field, putting the Sox ahead, 2-1. The home run was the New Jersey native's eighth of the season and now leads the Northwest League in the category.
The Volcanoes responded right away in the top half of the seventh with two runs to regain the lead, taking a 3-2 advantage over the Frogs into the seventh-inning stretch.
The Sox tied the game at 3-3 in the eighth when Taylor Ard hit a blooper just out of the second baseman's reach to plate Mike Zunino, who started the rally with a two-out double off the top of the center-field wall. The base hit by Ard extended his hitting streak to nine games.
Volcanoes reliever Tyler Mizenko (2-0, 2.37 ERA) recorded the win, while AquaSox reliever Blake Hauser (2-1, 1.98 ERA) recorded the loss.
The AquaSox (32-16, 4-6) will look to snap a four-game losing streak when they face the Volcanoes (17-31, 4-6) Saturday night in the second game of the three-game series. Left-hander Steven Ewing (2-1, 5.60 ERA) will take the hill for the Frogs, and will be opposed by right-hander Lorenzo Mendoza (0-1, 4.95 ERA) of Salem-Keizer.
