Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa-Waterloo blueliner Mark Friedman was a key player helping to deliver the Black Hawks' first home win of the season over the weekend, and his effort was recognized Monday by the United States Hockey League, who named him its CCM Defenseman of the Week.

Waterloo topped the Youngstown Phantoms 6-3 on Saturday, and Friedman was involved in more than half of the scoring. He recorded assists in each period before tallying the Hawks' final goal early in the third. He also recorded a +2 plus/minus rating, tied for best on the squad during the game.

The four-point game is the best for the veteran defenseman during his time in the USHL. With five points during 2013/14, he is now Waterloo's leading scorer, as well as the league's most productive defenseman. Friedman returned to the Black Hawks as the top point-producer held over from 2012/13, when he recorded eight goals and 27 assists in 64 regular season games. He is committed to Bowling Green.

Friedman is the first Black Hawk to be recognized with a USHL weekly award this season. Last year, a Waterloo player was the league's Forward, Defenseman, or Goaltender of the Week on 15 different occasions.

Now 2-1-0, no team in the league has played fewer games than Waterloo. However, the Black Hawks' schedule picks up with a pair of Western Conference road games this weekend. Friday, they travel to meet the Lincoln Stars before rolling on to face the Tri-City Storm on Saturday.
