Yakima Valley Pippins News Release
WALLA WALLA, Wash.- The Pippins took their 2nd series victory of the year against the Sweets last nights with their 9-3 win.
Tyler Frieders had his best start of the year throwing 7 innings while allowing only 1 run on 4 hits.
After both sides were scoreless and hitless through the first 3 innings, the Pippins took the first lead in the 4th on a bases loaded fielder's choice RBI from Owen McWilliam and an intentional rundown to make it 2-0.
Connor Coballes would add on 2 more runs in the 5th on his bases loaded single, and Jackson Reed and Shayne Simpson tallied RBI's on productive outs to make it 6-0.
Frieders took a no-hitter into the 5th, but allowed the first Sweets single with 2-outs. The starter left that runner stranded and sent it to the 6th where the Pippins scored 3 more.
The Pippins tallied 6 stolen bases in the 6th and 10 in the ballgame and Hank Dunn would steal his way around the bases after his RBI single and Yakima Valley led 9-0.
Frieders allowed the only run that crossed against him in the bottom of the 6th, but the Pippins 8-run lead seemed to be enough.
The Sweets had a chance in the 8th with the bases loaded and no-one out, but a drawn up pickoff to first flipped the momentum and Walla Walla could only plate 2.
In the 9th, Gaven Mattson got a 4-6-3 double play to close out the game, the third double play turned by the middle infield, and the Pippins won 9-3.
This clinched the series, moved the Pippins to 7-16, and gives them the opportunity for their first sweep of the year when they take on Walla Walla Thursday at 6:35.
