Frey Earns Scholarship to Ohio State, Will Join Buckeyes Mid-Season
December 4, 2013 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, IA- The Dubuque Fighting Saints announced today that goaltender Christian Frey has accepted a scholarship to Ohio State University, and due to the Buckeyes being shorthanded at the goaltender position, Frey will be leaving the Fighting Saints to advance to the NCAA level later this month. Frey's last game with the Fighting Saints will be Saturday, December 14 and he will join the Buckeyes for the remainder of their season.
"Ohio State has a need at goaltender, so they went and identified the top older goalie in juniors, and fortunately for Christian it was him," said Fighting Saints Head Coach and General Manger Matt Shaw. "Unfortunately for us, we are losing a big part of our team."
Originally drafted by Des Moines, Frey's USHL career started out with the Buccaneers where he played 15 games in 2011-2012 before being dealt to Tri-City. He spent parts of two seasons with the Storm before being released in late January 2013. Dubuque acted quickly and brought in the veteran goaltender, and Frey made his mark with the Fighting Saints.
"This is a situation where last year Christian was released by Tri-City, and then came to Dubuque, and in less than a year, he's got himself a scholarship to college, which has been his goal for a long time," said Shaw. "We wish him all the best at Ohio State."
In 2012-2013, Frey went 7-2-2 for Dubuque, posting a 2.54 goals against average. He appeared in one playoff game as Dubuque claimed its second Clark Cup title in the last three seasons.
This season, Frey has established himself as one of the USHL's top goaltenders. After a spectacular performance for Dubuque at the 2013 Junior Club World Cup in Omsk, Russia, Frey started the 2013-2014 USHL season out with a bang, recording back-to-back shutouts in his first two starts. Frey has compiled a 9-3-0 record so far this season, posting a stellar 2.08 goals against average and a .918 save percentage.
Frey will be on the Fighting Saints roster for the team's next four games prior to advancing to Ohio State. The Buckeyes do not play until December 28. Coach Shaw said a replacement for Frey will be named at a later date. Frey is the 17th player on Dubuque's active roster with a college commitment.
The Fighting Saints are at home for a pair of games this weekend, hosting Team USA U-17 for Ron Burgundy Night Friday at 7:35 p.m. Saturday is the annual Santa Claus presents: Teddy Bear Toss presented by Queen B Radio as the Fighting Saints host Waterloo at 7:05 p.m. Fans are encouraged to bring a new stuffed animal to the game and throw it on the ice after the Fighting Saints first goal for Toys for Tots. Tickets are available to both games by calling 563.583.6880 or visiting DubuqueFightingSaints.com.
