Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa-Former Waterloo Black Hawks defenseman Ian McCoshen is one of 26 players still vying for a place on the 2014 U.S. National Junior Team's 23-man roster, USA Hockey revealed on Wednesday.

The Boston College freshman who spent three seasons with the Black Hawks will participate in a National Junior Team training camp which begins one week from Sunday. After the camp and several pretournament exhibition games, the final National Junior Team roster will be revealed. The International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championships begin on the day after Christmas in Malmo, Sweden.

"This is another indication that Ian is among the best players in the world within his age group," said Black Hawks Head Coach P.K. O'Handley. "I am very happy for him. This will be an experience he will remember for a long time, and one which will help him develop even further."

McCoshen is trying to become the first player with ties to the Black Hawks to skate for the United States at the World Junior Championships since Patrick Wey during the 2011 event.

Joining the Hawks in 2010, McCoshen made 150 regular season appearances for Waterloo over three years, in addition to skating in 22 Clark Cup playoff games. The Hudson, Wisconsin native tallied 70 regular season points; he was the Hawks' fifth-leading scorer in 2012/13 and ranked second league-wide among defensemen. At the conclusion of last season, McCoshen was named to the All-USHL First Team. In June, the Florida Panthers selected him during the second round of the NHL Draft, making McCoshen the highest draft pick with ties to Waterloo in 20 years.

The United States has won two of the last four World Junior Championships, including the 2013 tournament last January. This year, the U.S. will play preliminary round games against Canada, Czech Republic, Germany and Slovakia.
