Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
On a cold June night at Security Service Field, the Sky Sox seemed to have control of the Fresno Grizzlies only to see the Grizzlies steal the game away in the later innings as the Sox lost 8-6 in front of 3,498 fans.
The Sky Sox got started early when Eric Young Jr. lead off the first and took Grizzlies starting pitcher Matt Kinney deep to left for a solo shot giving the Sky Sox a 1-0 lead. The Sox added a run in the third and another in the fourth as catcher Chris Iannetta, on rehab from the Rockies, belted a solo shot to left, giving the Sox a 3-0 lead.
Sky Sox starter Brandon Hynick pitched fantastically through four innings giving up no runs. It was the fifth when the Grizzlies finally got hold of Hynick as the they scored three runs, one of them an RBI single by right fielder John Bowker and the other two by way of a throwing error committed by Sox third baseman Kenny Perez tying the score at 3-3.
The Sox were able to take the lead back in the bottom of the fifth as Brandon Hynick helped himself out by smacking a solo homer to right. Matt Miller also added a run when he drove home Mike McCoy on a groundout giving the Sox a 5-3 lead.
The Grizzlies would battle back, however, scoring a run in the sixth on a dinger by center fielder Ben Copeland and one in the seventh by way of another tater by shortstop Kevin Frandsen to tie the game at 5-5. Once the Grizzlies tied the game up, Hynick was replaced by Damian Moss (5-1) after giving up five runs, four earned, on nine hits and recording three strikeouts.
The Grizzlies went on to score three runs in the eighth, two of which were charged to Moss giving him the loss on the night. Jake Wald got the rally started for the Grizzlies when he recorded a pinch-hit 2-run double, and two at-bats later, Frandsen knocked an RBI single to center giving the Grizzlies an 8-5 lead.
Fresno brought out Geno Espineli to close the ninth. Espineli gave up one run on two hits but held on for his seventh save of the season as the Grizzlies beat the Sox 8-6.
The Sox will take on the Grizzlies tomorrow at 12:35 PM in a matinee that will feature righty Matt Belisle (0-0, 12.27) of the Sox versus right hander Kevin Pucetas (5-1, 3.47) of the Grizzlies.
