Fresno Grizzlies News Release
FRESNO, Calif. - The first-place Fresno Grizzlies (67-48) turned in their best homestand in 14 years and barely missed making franchise history as they fell 9-3 to the Sacramento River Cats (53-63) on Sunday night at Chukchansi Park. Aiming to try and go a perfect 9-0 since last Saturday, the Grizzlies chances were thwarted when the River Cats put up runs in each of the first three innings to jump out to a 5-0 lead.
With Matt Duffy, L.J. Hoes, Max Stassi, Jon Singleton, and Jonathan Villar getting the day off, Fresno struggled to put together offense until a three-run eighth inning. They had a chance to cut the deficit even closer, but Tyler Heineman struck out swinging with runners on second and third to end the frame.
Starter Brady Rodgers was touched up for seven runs (five earned) over 5.1 innings. Darren Ford led off the game by ripping a 1-2 pitch into the left field bleachers for a homer. That was the first of seven extra-base hits off Rodgers, who has given up 15 runs over his last three starts. Luis Cruz came on in relief and allowed back-to-back homers in the sixth.
Joe Sclafani extended his career-best hitting streak to 17 games with a single in the fourth. He'd single in Tyler White in the eighth for his second hit of the game and is now batting .400 (18-45) with two doubles, a triple and 10 RBI since the All-Star Break.
Fresno takes their 11.5 game first-place lead on the road starting Tuesday for a quick four-game series at Albuquerque before returning home for an eight-game homestand that begins on Saturday, August 15th at Chukchansi Park.
