Fresh Faces Lead Colts Over Thunder

August 16, 2011 - North American League (NAmL)
San Angelo Colts News Release

San Angelo, Texas---Newcomers C.J. Beatty and Brian Nichols each homered and Colts starter Logan Williamson pitched seven innings to earn his league-leading 11th win, as San Angelo beat McAllen 13-9 Tuesday night at Foster Field.

The Thunder got on the board first with two runs in the top of the first inning courtesy of a two-run homer off the bat of Antoin Gray (1). They made it 3-0 after Zach Mandelblatt's (12) solo home run in the top of the fourth inning before Williamson settled down.

In the bottom of the fourth the Colts bats exploded for four runs, keyed by RBI hits from Clay Calfee and Beatty. Nichols (18) belted his first home run in a Colts uniform, a line shot that never got higher than the flag poles, to straight away centerfield in the fifth, and Beatty (14) hit a two-run shot in the sixth to make it 7-3. The Colts scored a run on a Thunder error in the seventh before Landon Camp (21) homered to lead a five-run ninth for San Angelo.

San Angelo's bullpen made it interesting in the top of the ninth, when Corey Goudeau allowed a grand slam to Eric Eiland and Yaibel Tamayo went deep off Chace Vacek to make it 13-9.

Williamson (11-1, 4.51) threw 124 pitches on the way to his 11th win of the season. He went seven innings and allowed three earned runs on six hits to go with three walks and ten strikeouts. At one point he struck out five Thunder batters in a row. McAllen starter Adrian Garza (2-4, 7.17) took the loss after he allowed seven runs on ten hits in five and two thirds innings pitched.
