Edmonton Elks News Release
(Edmonton) - Installation of the $2.1-million TELUS Wi-Fi network at Commonwealth Stadium is complete.
All visitors, regardless of service provider, can now connect to the internet on a mobile device from their seat and throughout the stadium concourse to enhance the Eskimos game experience.
Installation began in the spring with the official launch coming this Friday, August 21, on Social Media Night, presented by TELUS, when the Edmonton Eskimos take on the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
This next evolution of the game day experience with the new technology will include:
real time interaction with fans via social media networks
the ability to "Tweet Your Beats" to select stadium music for Eskimos games
using the Eskimos app from the stadium, fans can enter on-field and in-seat contests, as well as have team apparel delivered directly to their seats
fan photos featured on the high-definition video board through the TELUS #AllHeartEsks contest TELUS smartphones will automatically establish a secure connection to the #TELUSdirect network when in the stadium. Non-TELUS customers with Wi-Fi-enabled devices can connect to #TELUS through a simple splash page to enjoy the same service.
The TELUS Wi-Fi installation is the latest in a series of projects in the continuing modernization of Commonwealth Stadium and last year, in partnership with the City of Edmonton, a new high-definition video board was installed, complemented by a new state-of-the-art sound system. Additionally, visiting locker rooms were renovated and the endzones squared off.
The free Wi-Fi network is part of an eight-year strategic partnership between TELUS and the Eskimos to enhance fan experience and game day presentation through 2021. Recently, the company invested in an upgraded cellular network at the stadium to improve network reception during games.
The Eskimos and TELUS invite media on a behind the scenes tour of the new network on Thursday, August 20, at 1 p.m. Please RSVP to rose.phillip@esks.com to confirm attendance.
