San Jose SaberCats News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. (Nov. 18, 2004) - Quarterback MARK GRIEB, the offensive MVP of ArenaBowl XVIII, today signed a one-year contract to return to the defending league champion San Jose SaberCats, announced general manager Terry Malley. Financial terms were not disclosed.
"He's the guy that runs the offense," stated SaberCats head coach Darren Arbet. "It was imperative that we got him signed, and we did. We are very pleased to have Mark back."
The 6-foot-3 former Oak Grove High School and UC Davis standout culminated his seventh Arena Football League season by guiding the SaberCats to their second league title in three seasons, a 69-62 win at Arizona, in which he threw a championship game-record eight scoring passes.
"I'm happy to have it (the contract) done and be back here in San Jose," said Grieb. "San Jose has been good to me."
Grieb was tabbed a second-team all-league pick after a record-setting 2004 regular season campaign. He completed 335-of-459 pass attempts for an AFL record 73.0 percentage and also set a league mark with a 133.5 pass efficiency rating while leading San Jose to a league-high tying 11 wins.
Named the league's Offensive Player of the Year in 2002, Grieb is the holder of virtually all San Jose single-game, single-season and career records. He also owns a 52-13 record in regular season starts during his SaberCats career.
"I wanted to be here in San Jose, the SaberCats wanted me here and we figured out a way to get it done," said Grieb.
The SaberCats begin defense of their Arena Football League title at Tampa Bay on Saturday, January 29 and play their 11th home opener on Saturday, February 5 against the Las Vegas Gladiators at HP Pavilion.
