Trenton Thunder News Release
(Trenton, NJ)- The Trenton Thunder, the Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, and The Eastern League of Professional Baseball announced today that SS Freddy Sanchez has been selected for the 2002 Eastern League All-Star Team as the Utility Infielder. The All-Star team is voted on by Eastern League team managers and coaching staffs, sportswriters, radio and television broadcast personnel and other members of the media.
Sanchez, an 11th Round Pick in the 2000 June Draft, was among the Eastern League leaders in Batting Average (.328, 4th) and hits (102, T-4th) when he was promoted to the Pawtucket Red Sox in mid-July. The 24-year-old from Hollywood, CA had reached base, by hit or walk, in 43 consecutive games. It was the longest streak in Minor League Baseball at the time. He was also leading the team in runs (60), doubles (23) and stolen bases (19).
Also during the 2002 season, Sanchez set a Thunder franchise record with a 27-game hitting streak (May 15- June 25). During the streak he was 42-for-112 (.375) with 10 multi-hit games. Sanchez's 27 game run is the longest hitting streak in the Minor Leagues this season and the longest in the EL since Norwich's Donzell McDonald in 1999. Sanchez was voted into the Double-A All-Star Game this season and hit a home run off Reading's Ryan Madson in the 1st Inning.
"We are all very proud of Freddy," said Thunder General Manager Rick Brenner. "We are happy to see him get recognized for his accomplishments while he was with the Thunder and we look forward to seeing him in the Major Leagues someday."
